Bremervörde: Discover nature by the lake and local history
Accommodation in Bremervörde
Bremervörde combines waterside experiences with the town’s history and industrial heritage. The nature and adventure park is right on Lake Vörder See, the German Ferry Route from Bremervörde to Kiel starts at the harbour, and historic buildings preserve different chapters of the town’s past.
Lake Vörder See and outdoor activities
Bremervörde Nature and Adventure Park covers around 100 hectares and is free to enter. Its location right on Lake Vörder See lets you combine a visit to the park with views of the water. Sailing, surfing, rowing and stand-up paddleboarding are all possible on the lake. These different water sports provide additional reasons to visit alongside the nature and adventure park.
A walking tour of the town can also reveal its history in different ways. The “Bremervörde City Discovery” guide shows the locations of 34 sites that have become significant to Bremervörde and its residents, and conveys the town’s history and distinctive features. This makes it possible to connect individual historic sites with a broader picture of the town.
Museums, architectural history and industry
The Bachmann Museum presents collections on geology and archaeology in the last surviving building of Bremervörde Castle. The Chancellery and Stables building is 400 years old, bringing the castle’s history to life in a tangible way. Among the museum’s best-known exhibits are a Neolithic wooden wheel from Gnarrenburg-Karlshöfen, around 4,600 years old, and two fossilised whale skeletons around 12 million years old.
Please note for your visit: The Bachmann Museum exhibition is currently closed due to extensive renovation work. The museum park still invites you to take a walk through Bremervörde’s history. Check the current status of the exhibition before travelling. Another collection is housed on the ground floor of the Old Town Hall in central Bremervörde: the museum there contains around 220 works by Otto Tetjus Tügel, collected by Hein Meyer.
In Bevern, the listed Pape Brickworks is a well-preserved industrial heritage site and a tourist attraction in the region. Visitors can walk through the ring kiln, engine house, drying sheds and workers’ house. Information panels explain how bricks were made in the past. The site adds an insight into industrial brick production to the region’s museum and architectural history.
Harbour, Moorexpress and cycling routes
Bremervörde Harbour is the last tidal harbour on the Oste that is navigable by ship and the starting point of the German Ferry Route from Bremervörde to Kiel. Its character is shaped by both shipping and the tides. The historic Moorexpress offers another way to explore the area: its route is just under 99 kilometres long and has more than 20 stops; Bremervörde is also connected to the rail service. A bicycle carriage makes it possible to take bikes on board and combine a cycling tour with a train journey.
The Moorexpress runs from late April to early October, with additional special services during the winter and Christmas season. Operating times can vary from year to year, so it is a good idea to check the timetable for the year of your trip. There are four local themed routes for easy day trips by bike around Bremervörde. The 50-kilometre Oste Culture Route brings together nature and cultural experiences along the Oste. It offers a different way to explore the area from a ride on the Moorexpress.
