Discover Selsingen: Routes, Mill and History
Accommodation in Selsingen
Selsingen combines three independently navigable SteinErlebnisRoutes with evidence of its architectural and craft history. The listed local history museum, St. Lamberti Church and the “Elisabeth” gallery windmill represent different chapters in the town’s history; an outdoor swimming pool adds swimming and beach volleyball to the mix. The wider Rotenburg destination offers additional nature and cycling experiences. When planning, it helps to distinguish Selsingen’s own attractions from the wider regional selection.
Three sections, one shared starting point
All three SteinErlebnisRoutes start at the “Treffpunkt Jugend und Rad” by the Millennium Forest in Selsingen, on the B 71/Im Sick. Together they are about 100 kilometers long, but can be ridden independently of one another. This distinction is useful when choosing a route: the total distance describes the three sections combined, not a single tour. The shared starting point gives you a specific reference for choosing a route; you can select one of the individual sections rather than focusing only on the combined distance.
Architectural and craft history
The listed “Greven Worth” local history museum includes a thatched two-post house dating from 1701, historic outbuildings, and an exhibition featuring tools and materials used in traditional crafts. The history of the house and insights into various crafts come together in one place. St. Lamberti Church in Selsingen dates from 1725. The story of the “Elisabeth” gallery windmill’s reconstruction is also part of the town’s heritage: it was rebuilt on the outskirts of Selsingen in 1983 after the Selsingen Mill Preservation Society campaigned for its restoration and reconstruction. These three examples differ not only in their architectural forms, but also in the stories associated with them.
The outdoor swimming pool outside town
The outdoor swimming pool outside Selsingen, on the road towards Sandbostel, offers a different kind of outing. Its pool measures 25 Ă— 25 meters and includes a non-swimmer area. There is also a large beach volleyball court with particularly fine sand. Swimming and beach volleyball offer different activities; when planning, keep in mind that the pool is outside Selsingen.
Nature and outdoor activities in the wider Rotenburg destination
In the wider Rotenburg destination, the 24 NORDPFADE trails in Rotenburg district (WĂĽmme) offer a selection of circular hiking routes ranging from 5 to 32 kilometers. One example of the local landscape is the NORDPFAD Ostetal, which passes through a river landscape with dense floodplain forests, wet meadows, reed beds and steep slopes. The regional hiking options thus combine routes of varying lengths with distinctive scenery.
The WĂĽmme Cycle Route can also be considered in terms of its length and route format. The circuit is about 250 kilometers long and follows the WĂĽmme more or less closely. There is also a northern route of about 125 kilometers and a southern route of about 135 kilometers. Cross-connections divide them into attractive individual sections, which are also suitable for day trips and families. This offers a choice between a long-distance circuit and individual sections.
The Tister Bauernmoor is shaped by another kind of landscape. Together with the Ekelmoor, it forms a 1,220-hectare nature reserve complex. The Burgsittensen Moor Railway travels through the Tister Bauernmoor at 6 km/h. The typical raised bog landscape features pools, grasses, heather plants and birch trees. The landscape, the moor railway and the size of the protected area each offer a different focus for a regional outing.
Sandbostel is a launch point for paddling trips on the Oste. The river can only be navigated when water levels are sufficiently high; check the water level before your trip. Other regional attractions offer different experiences: the Sandbostel Camp Memorial provides educational programs for young people focused on commemoration, remembrance and learning at the historic site. LandPark LauenbrĂĽck is home to 200 wild and domestic animals in spacious enclosures and large barns.
Choose the right focus
Consider the specific attractions you choose in relation to the location of your accommodation. This makes your decision more about the experiences you want than simply a list of possible activities.
