Visselhövede can be discovered through two very tangible aspects: the Vissel Lakes in the heart of the town and its architectural and urban history, visible in several places. At the lakes, you can choose between Nordic walking, jogging and walking; at Visselhof, the local heritage house, St. John’s Church and the water tower, architecture and former uses tell different chapters in the town’s story. This allows you to combine nature in an urban setting with cultural history during your stay.

The lakes and town as points of reference

The Vissel Lakes are in the heart of Visselhövede, just a few steps from the town centre. There are opportunities for Nordic walking, jogging and walking. These three activities offer different ways to spend your day, but are all centred in the same convenient location. Visselhövede is also on the western edge of the Lüneburg Heath. The lakes give your plans an urban focus, while the town’s location on the edge of the heath provides a regional point of reference. When choosing accommodation, first consider whether the town centre and lakes or the historic sites will be the main focus of your stay.

Storehouses, the local heritage house and architectural history

Today’s Visselhof, behind the local heritage house, consists of historic storehouses. One of them is the honey storehouse from the district of Buchholz: in 2006, it was dismantled beam by beam, carefully restored and moved to this location. It is joined by the storage building from the Harm-Becker farm in Visselhövede. The two storehouses thus bring together different original connections in one place.

The local heritage house is one of the oldest houses on Visselhövede’s oldest street. After extensive building work and careful restoration, it was put to its present use in 1999. St. John’s Church is built of fieldstone in the North German Brick Gothic style; its freestanding bell tower has had its present form since 1799. The townscape thus brings together different historic architectural functions and designs.

The water tower also tells of a former use: it stands on the site of the former North German Honey and Wax Works and was built between 1896 and 1899. Initially, it supplied water to the factory and the town. Taken together, the storehouses, the local heritage house, the church and the water tower offer different points of interest for history enthusiasts: origins, restoration, architectural style and original function each take centre stage in their own way.

Experience the town’s history on a guided tour

A historical guided tour takes participants back to Visselhövede around 1900. The tour guide, Almuth Quehl, portrays the innkeeper’s wife “Minna Dierks”. Unlike the buildings, whose history can be traced through their origins, design or use, here the past is brought to life through a character. Separate dates can be arranged. If a private date better suits your plans, you can take this option into account when organising the tour.

Getting here and choosing accommodation

Visselhövede is on the Bremen–Uelzen railway line, served by Deutsche Bahn. There are also bus connections to Visselhövede and to the surrounding districts and villages. If you plan to travel by train or bus, check the timetables for your travel date in advance. This will help you coordinate your journey with the rest of your visit or with a scheduled guided tour.

The lakes’ location in the heart of Visselhövede and their proximity to the town centre provide a concrete point of reference. Then check which of the available accommodation locations best suits your plans.
