Bomlitz combines a distinctly forested character with a specific industrial history. Extensive woodland surrounds much of the town. At the same time, the EIBIA and the history of Wolff & Co. tell of different chapters of the past. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on nature or culture as separate themes.

Forests and trails around the EIBIA

The EIBIA history and memorial trail describes individual sites in the EIBIA with 15 information panels. The EIBIA history trail can be started at three locations: the Fuhrenkamp bunker, the filter and pumping station, or the Borg car park. These starting-point options help orient visitors beginning to explore the EIBIA.

In the vicinity of Bomlitz, four marked circular hiking trails lead through the Eibia/Lohheide landscape area south of Benefeld and Bomlitz. An archaeological circular trail also passes through this area. The Borg burial mounds in Lohheide, also near Bomlitz, date from 1200 to 1500 BC. Alongside the historic EIBIA sites, there are therefore other trails with an archaeological focus to choose from.

Industrial heritage and historic sites

The Wolff Old Administration Building housed the offices and laboratories of Wolff & Co. It also has an architectural connection to the Wolff Monument at the estate: the viewing axis of the Old Administration Building is aligned with this monument. The estate is also connected with the history of the town. The original settlement core, from which Bomlitz later developed, was located on the estate grounds.

The Africa House tells another story. It was intended as a kit building for the Wolff settlement in Tanzania, but could not be taken there and remained in Bomlitz. The Cordinger Mill is in Benefeld, near Bomlitz. This exemplary restored watermill complex is regarded as one of the most valuable historic buildings in Heidekreis district. The Cordinger Mill is open only for events.

FORUM Bomlitz offers guided tours, hikes and cycling tours on a range of topics. These activities offer different ways to explore the area, whether you prefer a guided tour or to discover it on foot or by bicycle. Bomlitz also has a sports field and tennis courts.

Practical information

Waldbad Bomlitz is currently undergoing extensive renovations and is due to reopen in 2026. If a visit to the outdoor pool is important to your plans, check the latest reopening information in advance.

In the wider Walsrode destination

The wider Walsrode destination offers further cultural and nature-related attractions. Walsrode Bird Park covers 24 hectares and is home to 4,000 birds from 650 different species. It features a flight show described as the largest in Europe, taking audiences on a journey around the world; show times may vary. A four-kilometre circular trail leads through the park grounds.

Walsrode Abbey is on the Jacobusweg Lüneburger Heide pilgrimage route. Public guided tours cover the abbey’s more than 1,000-year history and the present-day life of its Christian women’s community. From 1 April to 31 October, they take place daily at 3 pm except Mondays. If you are planning to join a tour, check the current schedule before your visit.

The Rischmannshof Heath Museum in Walsrode illustrates the development of rural life in the Lüneburg Heath. The attic houses a section on the town’s history and a Hermann Löns room. Among the museum’s historic buildings is a 1669 staircase granary that was relocated there. The bakery from Südkampen is also part of this historic setting: the 1752 building is the centrepiece of the museum’s annual baking days.

For a hike of a different length, the “Löns” circular hiking trail (RWW 8) in the wider Walsrode destination is a good option. The 16-kilometre circular route runs from Walsrode via the Löns grave, Tietlingen and Meinerdingen, and back to Walsrode; trail conditions may vary. This offers a way to weigh up different interests: in Bomlitz, the forested surroundings, the EIBIA and industrial history take centre stage, while the Walsrode attractions mentioned above add museums, an abbey and a bird park to the mix.
