Schneverdingen offers a changing mix of open heathland, trails and local cultural events. The Höpen landscape conservation area lies north of Schneverdingen and is a popular local recreation destination, with terrain shaped by the Ice Age. The Heath Garden, Osterheide and the traditional Heath Blossom Festival each add a different dimension to a stay. If you are looking for a place to stay, it helps to first decide whether nature trails, guided walks or a festival date will be the main focus of your trip.

Heath Garden and trails through the landscape

Around 200 different varieties of heather grow in Schneverdingen’s Heath Garden, with approximately 200,000 plants. The paved paths through the grounds allow wheelchair users, people with walkers and those with strollers to get around or stroll. The Heath Garden is described as freely accessible and free to visit; check before your visit whether this access is still available. From April to October, guided walks lasting around two hours are offered through Höpen and the Heath Garden. The options differ in focus for your day’s plans: the garden brings the heather varieties together in one place, while the guided walk takes you through Höpen and the Heath Garden. Check the dates for the seasonal walks before your trip.

The Heidebauernweg is a family circular trail along cultivated fields. Crops from the period of historic heath farming grow there. In Osterheide, the Nordic walking routes in the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve pass through open heathland, along woodland edges and by Sylvestersee. The trails therefore differ in their landscape themes: the Heidebauernweg focuses on the fields and their historic crops, while the Nordic walking routes take in open heath, woodland edges and the lake.

Experience tradition and culture

Schneverdingen’s traditional Heath Blossom Festival takes place every year on the last weekend in August. A Heath Queen is traditionally crowned at the festival. If you would like to plan your stay around this occasion, use the recurring time frame as a guide and check the exact festival dates. There is also culture outside the festival: Theeshof hosts theatre performances, poetry readings and film evenings. The local heritage association’s spinning and weaving group at Theeshof demonstrates traditional spinning. Dates for these demonstrations may change; check the times before your visit. This makes it easy to distinguish the annual festival weekend from individual events and demonstrations at Theeshof.

Getting around and choosing a location

In the area around the destination, Kutschen Meyer, Schneverdingen’s long-established company, offers carriage rides through the heathland around Schneverdingen in TÜV-inspected carriages. Before making specific plans, enquire about whether the rides are operating and the booking conditions. Schneverdingen has a railway station in the town centre and another in the heath village of Wintermoor.
