Schwarmstedt lies on the River Leine and is a recognised resort on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath, on the outskirts of Hanover. North of the town, the Leine flows into the Aller. There are several ways to explore during a stay: cycle routes and a circular tour through woodland and meadows, historic buildings, mechanical music and the farmers’ market in the town hall square. The aspects that interest you most can also guide your choice of accommodation and your travel plans.

Cycling and the waters of the Leine

The LĂĽneburg Heath Cycle Route and the Leine-Heide Cycle Route cross Schwarmstedt. One specific option is a suggested 54-kilometre route: the circular tour starts in Schwarmstedt and leads through woodland and meadows towards Gilten. This gives you both cycle routes that cross the town and a described circular tour starting in Schwarmstedt to help you plan. Check the route details before setting off.

There is also a convenient point of access to the water: Leine Harbour has a landing stage and serves as a starting point for canoeists and other waterway travellers. At the harbour entrance stands “PaarPferd”, a bronze sculpture by local artist Siegfried Steege. Boat travellers can stay overnight in the fishing club’s harbour building. Confirm this overnight accommodation option before your trip.

History and culture in town

St. Lawrence’s Church was first mentioned in a deed of gift around 1150. Frescoes dating from the 15th century were uncovered there in 1971/72. The church also contains a baptismal font dating from 1528 and a Renaissance pulpit from 1608. These dates give the church several distinct historical reference points, from its first mention to the frescoes and furnishings.

The Uhle-Hof also combines a long history with cultural uses. Its history dates back to the 15th century; since 1986, it has been used for public and cultural events as well as weddings. A bronze sculpture on the grounds depicts the 13 villages of the collective municipality of Schwarmstedt as owls. “Der Uhle-Boom”, a bronze sculpture by local artist Siegfried Steege, is also located there.

The Alte Burg was built in 1632 and is a rare type of Baroque half-timbered building. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The Rittergut von Lenthe in Schwarmstedt is also privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. If you include these buildings in your plans, viewing them from outside is part of the actual visit to both.

Harry’s Sound Museum offers a different cultural perspective: it presents a collection of mechanical musical instruments and demonstrates and performs masterpieces of mechanical music from its beginnings through to 1920. This lets you choose between historic buildings and a collection focused on music when planning your activities.

Farmers’ market and regional produce

Farmers, female farmers and direct sellers from the Aller-Leine Valley offer their products at the farmers’ market in the town hall square. The market has been held there every Friday afternoon since 1996. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the current date before travelling.

Planning your journey and accommodation search

Schwarmstedt has access to the A7 motorway and lies on Federal Highway 214 between Nienburg/Weser and Celle. The Schwarmstedt–Lindwedel–Bennemühlen railway line is included in the travel options for holders of GVH MobilCards. As fare details may change, check the conditions that apply to your journey before travelling.

This lets you focus your further research on the experiences that interest your travel group, while also keeping the most suitable way to get there in mind.
