Grindau: Village History and Trails

Grindau offers several different points of interest: the historic village layout of Klein Grindau, music and cultural events, and creative experiences and trails at Hof Grindau. The Village History of Klein Grindau

Klein Grindau was a clustered village with three farmsteads. The additional buildings constructed in the 19th century make the village look like a Rundling village. This resemblance therefore describes its later appearance; the settlement form passed down through history is that of a former clustered village. The plots are pie-shaped, and all the buildings face inward with their gables toward the center. The shape of the plots and the arrangement of the buildings draw the eye to the same spatial center. These details make the difference between the original village layout and its later appearance especially clear.

Music, Culture, and Community Events

The Heimatzoo Festival is a two-day music event held in August. The 2026 program was set to include face painting for children, a magic show, creative activities, and a bouncy castle on Saturday afternoon. This gives a specific outline of the children’s program for that edition. Beyond the festival, DorfLebenGrindau e.V. organizes regular get-togethers for shared leisure activities, public exhibitions and performances, as well as traditional village festivals. In nearby Schwarmstedt, Harry´s klingendes Museum presents and demonstrates mechanical musical instruments from their origins through 1920. The focus here is on instruments and their historical development—a distinct cultural highlight alongside Grindau’s events and village history.

Atelier, Horses, and Trails at Hof Grindau

Grindauer Création presents handmade furniture and decorations from its atelier in Grindau. Visitors can tour the atelier and find inspiration in the creations. If you would like to plan your visit, check in advance whether it is possible on your preferred date.

At Hof Grindau, the 800-meter-long Paddock Trail offers the opportunity to experience horses in their natural surroundings. This offers a different focus from a visit to the atelier: here, the focus is on horses and their surroundings, while the atelier features handmade furniture and decorations.

The two routes at the farm also have different characteristics. The Leine-Heide Cycle Route passes directly by Hof Grindau at the edge of Grindau village. The Way of St. James also passes the farm; it is a historic hiking trail to Santiago de Compostela. If you plan your trip around the type of activity, you can distinguish between a cycling route and a historic hiking trail.

Schwarmstedt as a Separate Part of the Travel Destination
