Horneburg can be explored in different ways: with circular routes through the countryside and insights into church history and traditional crafts. The Steinroute is a cycling tour, while a second circular route takes you through the Auetal valley on foot. You can also visit Liebfrauenkirche and the Crafts Museum. This lets you plan your stay around the balance you want between outdoor activity and cultural history.

Cycling and hiking on two circular routes

The Steinroute is an easy, 40.16-kilometre circular tour that starts and ends in Horneburg. It passes through woodland and the Aue river lowlands; along the way, views stretch towards the orchards of Altes Land and the Elbe. The combination of woodland, lowlands and views gives the cycling tour its scenic character and makes it a clear choice for a longer bike ride.

The easy circular hike “Through the Auetal valley over the heights to Bliedersdorf” covers 10.19 kilometres and starts and ends at Horneburg railway station. It passes through Daudieck and the protected Aue river lowlands on its way back to Horneburg. Along the way, follow the “Route 5 Auetal” markers. The two circular routes differ in activity and length: the hiking route is considerably shorter than the 40.16-kilometre cycling tour. Both are rated easy.

Liebfrauenkirche and the Crafts Museum

Liebfrauenkirche was first mentioned in 1396. It was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War and rebuilt in 1632. Its historic location also tells of earlier connections: the roads from Buxtehude to Stade and from the Geest to Altes Land met here. Its first mention, destruction, reconstruction and location offer insights into different aspects of its history.

The Horneburg Crafts Museum focuses on rural crafts. As an interactive museum, it presents Horneburg’s craft history; trades represented include wheelwrighting, saddlery and coopering. The museum grounds also feature a collection of wagons and carriages, as well as an 1830 coaching inn where travellers with horse-drawn carriages could stop. School groups can take part in educational programmes featuring old tools and craft techniques. The museum offers group tours by arrangement. If you are travelling with children and are interested in traditional crafts, the wagons, carriages and tools provide tangible points of interest.

Plan your journey and accommodation search

The Crafts Museum is a short walk from Horneburg railway station, where parking is available. Regular train services run via Stade to Cuxhaven and Hamburg. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel dates. The kind of day you want can help guide your accommodation search: do you want your trip to leave plenty of time for a longer bike ride, include a hike, or focus more on traditional crafts and church history? This way, you can tailor your search to the experiences that matter to you.
