Stade can be explored at different paces: on a walk through the historic town centre, with time for museums and churches, or along the city’s waterways. The historic town centre can be explored on foot in one to two hours. Individual guided tours, houses and collections also offer their own highlights—a good basis for planning your stay around your travel group’s interests.

Old Town, churches and local history

On a guided tour of the Old Town, you’ll get to know the Hanseatic city’s main sights. Check the dates and booking conditions in advance. The churches also offer different insights: St. Wilhadi is the oldest church in Stade. The tower tour at St. Cosmae lasts about 45 minutes, with a maximum of eight guests per tour. It’s a good idea to check the booking conditions for this tour before your visit.

The Schwedenspeicher Museum covers everything from Stade’s 1,000-year history and the importance of the Hanseatic League to the early history of the Elbe-Weser region. The museum programme thus brings the city’s history and the wider region together. If you prefer to explore different subjects through specific exhibitions, you can also see art at the Hahnentor Gallery of the Kunstverein Stade e.V. Exhibitions feature painting, contemporary and experimental art, photography, sculpture, objects and installations.

The Altländer House at the open-air museum

The open-air museum offers a particularly vivid insight into historic architecture and domestic life. The complex includes an Altländer farmhouse dating from 1733. Its richly decorated brickwork, original room layout and much of its original furnishings reveal different aspects of the house. The museum also presents the culture and nature of the Altes Land.

Weaving and spinning take place in the Altländer House on the last Sunday of every month. From May to September, guided tours are also held there on the second and last Sunday of each month, each lasting 60 minutes. As current dates are seasonal, it’s worth checking the museum calendar before travelling. The open-air museum grounds are free to visit year-round; check the museum’s latest notices before your visit.

Waterways and longer routes

The Stade Paddling Trails cover seven kilometres from the Holzhafen along the Burggraben and the Schwinge towards Schwedenschanze. The paddling area in Stade is described as around ten kilometres long: it extends from the Holzhafen in the town centre, around the Old Town, to the green meadows of the Schwinge Valley.

On the Schwinge, the History Trail passes 14 stops featuring historical images, explanations and milestones in Stade’s history. Routes also run through the city away from the water: the 530-kilometre Mönchsweg is a cycle route from Bremen via Stade to Wischhafen on the Elbe; the Way of St. James also passes through Stade. These different routes invite you to weigh up a city visit, a paddling tour or a longer journey, rather than combining them into a single outing.

Experience culture and plan your stay

The culinary tour “Butter bei die Fische” explores the cuisine of the Hanseatic era. If this topic matches your interests, check the dates and booking conditions before making plans. Stade’s options are varied: from a walk through the town centre to historic houses and art, as well as a tour focused on food.

When looking for accommodation in Stade, it may help to decide first what you want to focus on: will your trip be mainly about spending time in the Old Town, churches and museums, or would you also like to include waterways and routes in your stay? Current timetables are important for planning your journey and day trips. Elbe-Radwanderbus Line 1 runs seasonally from Stade via Drochtersen, Wischhafen and Freiburg to the Natureum Niederelbe at the mouth of the Oste; check operating days and the timetable in advance. The S5 provides a direct connection from ElbgaustraĂźe station via Hamburg Central Station, Harburg and Buxtehude to Stade. Check the current timetable for this service too.
