Eckwarden is an old terp village at the southern tip of the Butjadingen peninsula, located about two kilometers inland from the existing line of dikes. The historic village center includes St. Lamberti Church and a separate bell tower. A few kilometers away, Eckwarderhörne has a large grassy beach by the water, mudflats and a view of the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven. This means village history and coastal experiences offer distinct highlights for your stay.

Church, bell tower and village traditions

St. Lamberti Church is a brick fortified church dating largely from the 13th century. It is one of the churches in the region particularly richly adorned with works by woodcarver Ludwig Münstermann. The bell tower also has its own story: it stands separately beside the road and is older than the church. The organ adds a specific date to this ensemble. Johann Claussen Schmid of Oldenburg built it in 1856.

These details reveal various aspects of local history: fortified church architecture, woodcarving, an older, standalone bell tower and organ building. The setting of the Whitsun maypole, carnival and village festivals are also part of maintaining local traditions. If you would like to plan around these events, check the specific dates locally.

Mudflats and water in Eckwarderhörne

Eckwarderhörne beach changes character with the tides. At low tide, it becomes a mudflat where you can discover the local flora and fauna. At high tide, the beach is a place for swimming, paddling and various water sports. From the large grassy beach by the water, you can see the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven. Various guided mudflat walks start here throughout the year.

The mudflat explorer event at the mudflat guide hut is intended for toddlers and preschool-age children. The mudflat exploration covers about 300 meters and takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. On a family mudflat walk, fish and crabs caught with dip nets are examined and then released. Event dates may vary. Also in Eckwarderhörne, the Oberfeuer Preußeneck lighthouse is designated as an observation tower; check the current access information before visiting.

A much longer cycling option is the fifth stage of the North Sea Cycle Route: it is about 64 kilometers long and runs from Eckwarderhörne to Wilhelmshaven in a semicircle around the Jade Bight. When choosing between the local loop and this long stage, the route distances and tour destinations are therefore key considerations. Check current route conditions and signs before setting off.

The MS “Harle Kurier” passenger and bicycle ferry connects Wilhelmshaven with Eckwarderhörne. It operates seasonally; check current departure times before your trip. The nearest bus stop is Eckwarden Fähranleger. It is also a good idea to check current bus connections before travelling.

More nature spots and planning your trip
