Eckwarderhörne: Lighthouse, Wadden Sea and Green Beach
Accommodation in Eckwarderhörne
Eckwarderhörne shows its coastal side through its lighthouse, green beach and Wadden Sea experiences. A striking landmark, nature experiences and routes on foot or by bike give your stay a variety of highlights.
Lighthouse and regional history
The 44.75-metre-high Preußeneck upper light stands within the dike. After several years of restoration, it reopened as an observation tower in 2017 and was made accessible to the public. The viewing platforms are at heights of 18.40 and 34.50 metres, offering views of Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. This brings together the lighthouse’s precise height and views of the national park.
Right next to the upper light is the engine house, which has been converted into a documentation centre. Modern presentation technology is used to showcase the history of lighthouses, the region and its times, as well as the cultural landscape history of Jade Bay and the Outer Jade. The themes thus range from the individual structure to regional history and cultural landscapes. If you enjoy bringing landscapes and history together when you travel, this offers a complementary focus alongside the lighthouse.
Green beach, Wadden Sea and dog exercise area
Eckwarderhörne’s green beach lies at the southern tip of the Butjadingen peninsula. It is predominantly green, with grassy areas. Conditions for water activities are favourable at high tide, so these opportunities depend on the state of the tide. The green beach also invites visitors to join guided mudflat walks.
Travellers with dogs have a dedicated place in Eckwarderhörne where dogs can run free: the dog exercise area is a fenced, 1,500-square-metre grassy space. Dogs can run there without a leash. The beach and dog exercise area thus offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
Discover and explore the Wadden Sea
The “WATT 4 Kids” mudflat walk includes working with nets, shell experiments and observing lugworms. The activity combines several specific things to do in and around the Wadden Sea. For those planning a trip with children, it is an experience explicitly named for children, though no specific age limits can be inferred from this.
The tidal flow table in Eckwarderhörne offers a different way to explore. Visitors can use their own muscle power to set a water-filled model of Jade Bay in motion. Rather than simply looking at the landscape, visitors can move a model of Jade Bay itself. The mudflat walk and flow table thus offer different ways to explore: outdoors on the mudflats and with a water-filled model.
On foot, by bike and across the mouth of Jade Bay
The “Meeresspuren” circular trail runs from Tossens to Eckwarderhörne and is 7.1 kilometres long. For cycling, the 20.38-kilometre “TOUR 07 – from Tossens to Roddens” circular route offers views across the dike in Eckwarderhörne. The German Sluice Route is a signposted route that runs along the dike through Eckwarderhörne towards the municipality of Stadland. These options include a named walking trail, a cycling loop and a route along the dike, each offering a different way to find your bearings.
During the season, the “MS Harle Kurier” passenger and bicycle ferry operated by Warrings crosses the mouth of Jade Bay between Eckwarderhörne and Wilhelmshaven. If you are planning to use the connection, check the timetable before travelling, as times may change. Its seasonal operation is an important distinction from the features of the beach and lighthouse described as being available year-round.
Find the right accommodation for your stay
If you are planning a crossing to Wilhelmshaven, also take the ferry’s operating season into account. This helps you choose where to stay based on the experiences that matter most to you on your trip.
