Elbe brings together quiet, agriculture-shaped villages and impressive church art. Groß Elbe, Klein Elbe and Gustedt lie south of the Lichtenberge hills, with the Harz panorama as a backdrop. Particularly striking are the different churches and the countryside around Gustedt. In Elbe, cultural history meets a peaceful, rural setting.

Church Art in Groß Elbe and Klein Elbe

St. Martin’s Church in Groß Elbe is well worth a visit. Its interior is richly Baroque; the interior and exterior have remained almost unchanged from their High Baroque state in 1698. There are 30 panel paintings from the late 17th century on the gallery parapet. The floor also tells a story: the original natural-stone paving made of river pebbles was uncovered in 1993. A baptismal angel was rediscovered in 1953.

Further details can be seen in the furnishings. The colourful pulpit wall dates from the 17th century and was extensively restored by 2002. The organ was built by Almes in Hildesheim in 1799. In St. Martin’s, therefore, wall decoration, paintings, flooring and organ stand alongside one another as distinct features of a richly furnished church interior. In Klein Elbe, St. Nicholas’s Church offers an earlier historical note: it dates from the mid-14th century. Those interested in church architecture will find two churches whose recorded construction dates are clearly far apart.

Villages, Agriculture and Countryside

The peaceful surroundings south of the Lichtenberge hills are strongly shaped by agriculture. In Gustedt, the landscape is also defined by several flowing streams. The village lies on the edge of the Innerste glacial valley and is sheltered by the Gustedter Berge, Hakelberg and Hamberg hills. These geographical features give the village a distinctive profile within descriptions of Elbe’s landscape: the Harz panorama, the agricultural surroundings and the streams in Gustedt are different aspects of the same rural destination.

This contrast can help guide your choice of accommodation: would you like to focus primarily on the church art in Groß Elbe and Klein Elbe, or does Gustedt’s location on the edge of the Innerste glacial valley appeal to you more? Information about the villages gives you different themes to guide your search for accommodation in Elbe.

More Culture and Countryside in the Wider Destination of Wolfenbüttel

The wider destination of Wolfenbüttel offers further cultural and landscape highlights. The historic half-timbered old town of Wolfenbüttel has around 1,000 half-timbered houses. Wolfenbüttel Castle is the second-largest castle in Lower Saxony and developed from a medieval moated castle. The castle is also home to the only High Baroque state apartments of the former Duchy of Brunswick preserved in their original form. The Herzog August Library was founded in 1572 and is known as the “eighth wonder of the world.”

Literary and urban-history highlights are also represented there: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing lived in the Lessinghaus in Wolfenbüttel from 1777 to 1781. The Bürger Museum presents extraordinary and typical exhibits from 500 years of Wolfenbüttel’s urban and civic history in themed displays. Those more interested in the landscape will find forests, valleys, protected wetlands, heathland, spring-fed rivers and small lakes in Elm-Lappwald Nature Park. The nature park is located in the districts of Wolfenbüttel and Helmstedt and covers 470 square kilometres. Its network of walking trails is about 500 kilometres long and includes signposted circular routes, car parks and shelters.

Another way to explore the wider destination is the approximately 170-kilometre Eulenspiegel tourist driving route, which connects Braunschweig, Wolfenbüttel, Schöppenstedt and Helmstedt.
