Börßum is a destination for active days on the water and by bike: the canoe trip on the Oker passes through the town, and a circular cycling route starts and ends at Börßum station. This puts two very different ways of experiencing the landscape centre stage—following the course of the river for orientation or riding a set route on two wheels.

Experience the Oker by canoe

The canoe trip from Schladen to Wolfenbüttel covers around 20 kilometres. Its river landscape is characterised by tranquil floodplains, small rapids and numerous bends; Börßum lies along the route. The trip is suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers. The section near Börßum is considered easy for inexperienced paddlers. Depending on water levels and the current, a modified weir can create light whitewater—a specific feature of the river’s course here.

The stations in Schladen, Börßum and Wolfenbüttel are each also a 10- to 15-minute walk from the Oker. This provides a practical point of reference when factoring the canoe trip into your travel plans. Check the current conditions on the water beforehand, as the potential whitewater effect depends on water levels and the current.

Cycling routes with different highlights

If you prefer to plan a clearly defined circular route, try “Hornburg and the Großer Bruch”: it is 43.42 kilometres long, rated easy, and starts and ends at Börßum station. The station’s Bike-and-Ride box offers dry, theft-protected bicycle parking. This lets you treat the cycling tour as a day trip in its own right and connect the route to Börßum as its start and end point.

The Ilse Cycle Route also ends at Börßum station. Further along the route, narrow riverside paths lined with trees shape the landscape. You can extend your trip by about 14 kilometres to Wolfenbüttel via the Weser-Harz-Heide long-distance cycle route. A cycling route from Börßum station also leads to the Mattierzoll border monument, where it joins the Iron Curtain Trail and the Green Belt Germany. The options therefore differ: an easy circular tour with a fixed start and finish, or a cycling route connecting to further trails, with a border monument as a destination.

A different perspective on Wolfenbüttel

The wider destination of Wolfenbüttel offers a cultural perspective of its own. Wolfenbüttel’s historic half-timbered old town includes around 1,000 half-timbered houses. Wolfenbüttel Castle is the second-largest castle in Lower Saxony and was built on the site of a medieval moated castle. The Herzog August Library was founded in 1572 and is considered the “eighth wonder of the world.” These highlights offer a different focus from the Oker and cycling routes that shape Börßum as a destination for active trips.

If you are considering Börßum as a base for your stay, you can weigh up canoeing, a circular tour and longer cycling routes when planning. The options differ in how you get around, the distance and the scenery—and offer different ways to discover the region.
