Gelbensande offers two clear perspectives: the history of the hunting lodge and the trails in the municipality. The lodge was deliberately built in a clearing so that the forest and its wildlife would form part of the setting. The town’s history includes a grand ducal summer residence, a museum and memorial sites commemorating the end of the war. There is also a network of cycling and hiking trails throughout the municipality. When planning your visit, you can therefore ask yourself whether you are more interested in the history of the lodge, remembrance or getting out into the forest.

The Hunting Lodge and Grand Ducal History

Gelbensande Hunting Lodge was built between 1885 and 1887 by court architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel, commissioned by Mecklenburg Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III and his wife, Anastasia Mikhailovna. It served as the summer residence of the Mecklenburg grand dukes. Anastasia Mikhailovna was a granddaughter of Russian Tsar Nicholas I. The lodge was also the childhood home of Cecilie, the last German Crown Princess, and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark—a connection that shapes its historical significance.

The state rooms are run as a museum and cultural venue. A tour takes visitors through twelve living rooms; splendid fireplaces and technical details offer tangible points of interest. The rooms also provide a romantic setting for weddings. If you are planning a ceremony there, check the current availability of dates in advance.

Local History and Remembrance

The military cemetery, now a war graves site, is located at Am Jagdschloss 5. It holds 53 people in individual graves and five in collective graves. Another memorial in Gelbensande commemorates five Polish forced laborers who were buried outside the municipal cemetery in 1945.

The hunting lodge itself is also connected with the history of the end of the war: on May 1, 1945, an auxiliary hospital was set up in the unused princely residence by the lodge, after around 750 wounded people had been unloaded from two trains evacuated from Pomerania. Alongside its architectural and family history, these events give the town’s history a somber dimension.

Forest Trails and Outdoor Activities in the Municipality

In the municipality of Gelbensande, the surrounding forest areas are linked by a varied network of cycling and hiking trails. Along the B105, the network connects to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route; forest trails also provide a connection to the Fischland-DarĂź-Zingst area. Hiking maps displayed throughout the municipality support walks and provide information. This offers different ways to explore: on foot, using the maps for orientation, or by bike on the local trail network. Check the conditions along your chosen route before setting out.

Other Historic Landmarks

Other buildings also add to the town’s history. The former grand ducal forestry inspectorate in Gelbensande was built after 1877. To the west of the town stands Gelbensande Church, built of brick in 1924. Its roof structure and bell tower were completely renovated in 2008. These dates highlight different aspects: the former forestry inspectorate, the church’s brick construction and the later restoration of its distinctive features.
