Discover Jarmen on the Peene
Accommodation in Jarmen
Jarmen lies directly on the southern bank of the Peene; the river and harbour shape the character of the town. At Peenekai, old harbour warehouses stand beside newer grain silos. The art mill at the harbour was built in 1907 and adds a striking testament to industrial history to this scene. If you are looking for a connection to water, the harbour and small-town history during your stay, Jarmen offers a tangible starting point.
The Peene, the harbour and transport history
Jarmen’s transport history is also closely linked to the Peene. A ferry near Jarmen was first mentioned in 1368. Ferry service ended in 1863, after a wooden drawbridge was built. Thanks to its location by the Peene ferry, Jarmen developed into a transport and trading hub. The new Peene Bridge on the L 35, formerly the B 96, connects Jarmen directly with the northern bank of the Peene. The A 20 motorway bridge also connects Jarmen with the northern bank. The former ferry crossing and today’s bridges thus represent different chapters in the town’s history.
The church and townscape
The Neo-Gothic St. Mary’s Church was consecrated in 1863. Its notable features include a bell dating from 1409 and a Grüneberg organ from 1911. The choir contains colourful stained-glass windows created shortly before the First World War. These different dates give the church several historical points of reference and make it a destination in its own right for culturally minded visitors.
The markets and their buildings also reveal different facets of the townscape. The triangular Old Market, near the church, forms a tranquil small-town ensemble. The town hall was built in the early 19th century, renovated around 1966 and bears a town chronicle on its gable. In the middle of the triangular New Market stands a war memorial commemorating the years 1866 to 1871; the site has been renovated. The house at Waterstraat 5 on the New Market dates from 1912 and features distinct Art Nouveau elements. An old rectory with a four-column portico also stands on the New Market, although it has since been altered. These buildings provide a range of points of interest, from the town hall with its gable chronicle to the Art Nouveau features of the house at Waterstraat.
Park, sport and choosing where to stay
The town park lies at the western edge of town, in the direction of Demmin. Its notable features include a memorial to the First and Second World Wars and the motoball stadium. The stadium’s playing surface was asphalted in 2015. This part of Jarmen thus brings together memorial sites and a distinctive sporting attraction. MSC Jarmen competes in the Nordliga against teams from Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as its local rival from Malchin. As league participation may change, check current match details in advance.
If this combination suits your stay, you can include Jarmen among the possible places to base yourself.
