Kruckow is an old manor village, first documented in 1249. Megalithic traces, a former manor park with ancient trees, and historic buildings in Schmarsow each lend the area a distinct character. Together, they tell the story of a long local history and show how many different themes can be part of a stay here.

Manor History and Older Traces

The megalithic tomb near Marienfelde is right beside the B110. There is a car park. Two other megalithic tombs near Kruckow are less well preserved; their different states of preservation offer a concrete comparison with the site at Marienfelde. Kruckow itself is also on the B110.

The former manor park also preserves several impressive ancient trees. A historic rampart is located in Tutow-Dorf, within the municipality of Kruckow; the ruins of Burg Osten are also within the municipal area. A stone murder cross stands at the edge of the village in the direction of Schmarsow. The area's history thus reveals very different traces, from a prehistoric burial site to historic buildings and memorials.

Schmarsow Castle and Church

Schmarsow Castle was built around 1698/99 as a three-winged complex. In 1796, it was remodelled in the Baroque style. Around a century separates its construction from this remodelling. The castle is a two-storey rendered building with a hipped roof: its original design and later remodelling mark two clearly distinct stages in its history.

Schmarsow Church probably dates from around 1400. It is a towerless brick hall church with a five-sided chancel. The church contains a polychrome sandstone epitaph dating from 1625. The single-manual organ was built in 1886 and restored in 2020. The church interior thus brings together architectural history, a colourful epitaph, and an instrument with its own restoration history.

A key to the church is available in the village. As visitor information can change, check before visiting whether this option is still available.

Landscape and Trails

Kruckow lies on higher ground that slopes down towards the Tollense; the river forms the southern boundary of the municipality. To the north, the Kuckucksgraben runs through a glacial meltwater valley. These geographical features give the municipal area distinct contours: the river and the valley each define a different part of the landscape.

Hiking trails lead from Schmarsow Castle through woods and meadows and along the Tollense. These opportunities to experience the landscape complement the historic sites with an active way to spend time outdoors.
