Lelkendorf: Estate History, Culture and the Peene
Accommodation in Lelkendorf
Lelkendorf offers several ways to explore: the history of the estate and the von Levetzow family, culture at the Kulturgut and castle, and water-based excursions and nature observation along the Peene. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether architectural and cultural history, a stay at the castle, or the river and lowland landscape should be your main focus.
Estate History, Culture and the Castle
The Lelkendorf estate has been the family seat of the von Levetzow family since 1225, with an interruption from 1945 to 1989. This break is part of its history, as is the family’s long-standing connection to the estate.
At the Kulturgut Lelkendorf, the former KFL hall was converted into a concert hall. A year-round cultural programme is held there; individual events may vary. If a particular concert is important to your trip, check the date in advance. A guest studio with a holiday apartment complements the cultural programme; the apartment is intended for artists working there.
Schloss Lelkendorf offers visitors two holiday apartments for experiencing the castle. By contrast, the Kulturgut lists one holiday apartment for artists working there: the two offers therefore differ in whom they are intended for. The castle also has a historic hall used for concerts, as well as a sauna and a park with a fire pit, stone oven and old trees. At the castle, accommodation and a cultural venue sit side by side.
Church Architecture in Groß Markow
The village church in Groß Markow makes its own architectural statement. It was built of red brick in the Neo-Gothic style in 1840. Its furnishings also have their own history: the organ was built by Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer in 1865, and the stained-glass windows were created in 1890. The dates are easy to distinguish: 1840 marks the construction of the church, while the organ and windows have their own, later dates. Those interested in architectural history can consider the building itself and its furnishings separately, rather than attributing all the historical details to a single point in time.
Water-Based Excursions and Nature Observation
Lelkendorf is considered a starting point for exploring the Peene by water. The river is navigable from Neukalen to the Baltic Sea; this puts the connection with the Peene in a broader context. The Peeneweg offers a different perspective: from Lelkendorf, it takes you to the Peene lowlands. There are opportunities there to observe cranes, eagles, beavers, otters and other wildlife. While water-based excursions focus on the river, the route into the lowlands foregrounds the landscape and wildlife observation.
A Route for Castle Enthusiasts
Schloss Lelkendorf is among the castles featured on the regional castle circular route. If you plan your trip around this route, check its course and length before setting off. This lets you consider a visit to the castle as part of a wider route-planning decision, without assuming a particular route.
