Lohmen combines medieval church art and regional history with village life and nature-based recreation. You may be interested in the wall paintings and museum exhibits, want to plan your visit around a festival, or focus on forests, hiking and summer swimming. These different themes give your stay its own distinctive character.

Medieval Village Church and Regional History

Lohmen Village Church is a medieval fieldstone building with two bays and a narrower, single-bay chancel. It was built at the end of the 13th century. A north sacristy and a narrower tower were added later. Its medieval wall paintings are particularly distinctive: their imagery and execution are considered unique in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and of great art-historical significance. The interior, painted throughout, continues to attract visitors today.

The local history is also reflected in the granary, which became the Lohmen Village Museum in 2006. The museum presents the history of the region in the 20th century. From May to October, it is open Friday to Sunday from 3 to 5 pm; from October to May, visits are only possible by prior arrangement. Check the visiting arrangements before you arrive.

The area’s settlement history reaches further back: the area of today’s municipality of Lohmen had been settled at least 5,000 years ago. Megalithic tombs and burial mounds in the surrounding area bear witness to this; they include a larger burial ground with at least ten Bronze Age burial mounds.

Village Life and Festivals

The village festival is held annually and brings together the village square and the festival barn. The Mecklenburg Sheep-Shearing Festival is also held in Lohmen and brings these two venues together. A traditional European Christmas market likewise takes place at the village square and festival barn.

The festival barn also serves a practical purpose for finding your way around: the Lohmen Tourist Information Office is located there in the village center. It gives visitors tips for their stay in the region. When looking for accommodation, you can first consider what you want to focus on during your stay—such as church art and the museum, a festival or nature experiences.
