Discover Müritz: Bogs, reed beds and forests
Accommodation in Müritz
Müritz National Park includes a protected area around Müritz, Germany’s largest lake. Forests, bogs, lakes, and wide meadows shape the national park’s landscape. At Müritz, you can choose from a range of activities: wildlife watching, a bike tour, forest landscapes, or activities on the water.
Shoreline landscapes and bogs
The eastern shore of Müritz is an extremely gently sloping outwash plain formed during the last major glaciation. Vast reed beds, bogs, and swamp forests shape this area; the water level there fluctuates considerably with the seasons. This creates shoreline areas with a distinctive landscape alongside the lake. For travelers interested in geological formations and wetlands, the eastern shore is a striking natural area.
Wildlife watching and scenic views
Müritz National Park provides protected habitats for many endangered animal and plant species. These include cranes, ospreys, white-tailed eagles, and red deer. Watching cranes, ospreys, and white-tailed eagles is especially popular in autumn; sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed. Two observation towers offer different views: from Käflingsberg Tower, you can see across the entire Müritz section of the national park, while the observation tower at Great Serrahn Lake offers a view of the lake and the surrounding forest landscape.
The national park information centers feature exhibitions about nature and the landscape, as well as personal tips and advice from rangers on worthwhile tours and wildlife-watching spots. Nature trails, ranger-led tours, and information centers provide further insights into the flora and fauna. Opening hours and individual exhibitions may change, and programs vary, so check the offerings relevant to you before your visit.
Exploring by bike and on the water
More than 600 kilometers of marked hiking and cycling trails run through Müritz National Park. One cycling option is the “Blue Cyclist” circular route between Boek and Schwarzenhof, which lets you explore the landscape on the eastern shore of Müritz by bike. Route conditions may change, so it is worth checking the current route before setting out. There are also opportunities to explore the water: environmentally friendly boat and canoe trips are permitted on many, but not all, lakes in Müritz National Park, subject to the park’s rules.
Forest and World Heritage
The forest adventure trail from Zinow to Dianenhof lets you experience the forest landscape around Serrahn, with its ancient, near-natural beech forests, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. In the wider surrounding region, the two-kilometer-long Wolf Trail in Zwenzow focuses on wolves. Interactive stations explain the animals’ behavior; a historic wolf trap pit and a fairytale hut featuring wolf myths add history and storytelling traditions to the trail. The Wolf Trail offers families a shared theme: it provides children and adults with well-founded knowledge about wolves. Individual stations may be renovated.
