Discover Nordvorpommern: Coast, Nature and Garden Culture
Accommodation in Nordvorpommern
Nordvorpommern offers a wide variety of landscapes and experiences: coastal formations, protected lakes and forests sit alongside historic parks, gardens and cultural sites. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding what you would like to focus on. Would you like to put nature at the heart of your trip, are you particularly interested in gardens and parks, or would you like to include seasonal events? These questions can also help give your search for suitable accommodation a clear direction.
Coast, Lakes and Forest Landscapes
The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula is part of Nordvorpommern’s coastline. Its landscape includes steep and accreting coasts, windflats and deeply indented Bodden coasts with peninsulas, spits and islands. The different coastal formations illustrate the diversity of the landscape along this stretch of the Baltic Sea.
Inland, the restored Richtenberger See lies between Franzburg and Richtenberg. It is a nature reserve where various waterbirds breed, rest and spend the winter. Several viewpoints offer glimpses of the renaturation project. They provide an opportunity to learn about the restoration of the lake without reducing this natural area to its birdlife alone.
Other well-known nature reserves in Nordvorpommern include Ahrenshooper Holz, Ribnitzer GroĂźes Moor, Kormorankolonie Niederhof, Unteres Recknitztal, Grenztalmoor, and Borgwallsee and PĂĽtter See. The Nordvorpommersche Waldlandschaft is another distinct landscape area, stretching between Marlow and Stralsund. Middle spotted woodpeckers and red-breasted flycatchers breed in its deciduous woodlands; the lesser spotted eagle also breeds there, a special feature of the area.
Gardens, Parks and Historic Sites
The manor house at Alt Guthendorf is a listed building dating from 1796 that has been lovingly restored. The manor park is right next to it. It is home to very old apple and pear trees, including some varieties that are partly unknown. The manor’s natural-style garden focuses on another aspect of nature: it showcases flower meadows that are friendly to insects, herb beds and nesting sites. The park and garden offer different points of interest, from old fruit trees to habitats for insects and birds.
Schlemmin Castle Park is a landscaped park of more than 18 hectares, with the neo-Gothic Schlemmin Castle nestled within it. On a circular trail, you can discover giant trees over 500 years old, including oaks, substantial beeches, robinias and larches. The park’s size and circular trail offer a different way to experience the landscape than the garden at Alt Guthendorf: here, old trees and the interplay between park and castle shape the visit.
Since 1971, the Mecklenburg Salt Museum in Bad SĂĽlze has been housed in the former administrative building of the Grand Ducal Saltworks, the Altes Salzamt. The half-timbered building dates from 1759. Bad SĂĽlze is also home to the listed spa park. There, you can combine walks beneath the trees with visits to the nearby salt meadows. The museum and spa park appeal to different interests: historic buildings on the one hand, parkland and salt meadows on the other.
Seasonal Experiences and Regional Insights
Treckeltied is an annual event organised by the AG Gartenpfad Nordvorpommern, part of the LAG Nordvorpommern e. V. association. Since 2016, it has taken visitors through the autumn gardens and parks of the Nordvorpommern Garden Trail. During Treckeltied, visitors can explore various gardens and parkland over an autumn weekend by bicycle, car or on foot. As part of the 2026 Treckeltied programme, ADFC is offering free guided bike tours along selected gardens in Nordvorpommern. If you are planning a tour or visit, check the relevant programme information before your trip.
At the OstseemĂĽhle Langenhanshagen, visitors can watch oil being pressed and taste various oils and flours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Check these visiting hours again before you set off. This lets you plan a visit to the mill alongside nature or park experiences, rather than treating it as a full-day excursion.
For a travel group with a variety of interests, there are several options to choose from: birdlife and renaturation at Richtenberger See, forest landscapes, historic gardens, a museum visit or the autumn garden event. Decide which experiences matter most to you before comparing places and accommodation.
