Penkow combines a distinctive village pond with a restored stream and a history dating back to its first documented mention in 1309. The village pond beside federal highway B192 is considered a local landmark. The Klostermühlbach stream flows through the municipality and has been restored through environmental protection measures. This offers two concrete perspectives when choosing where to stay: the village pond’s defining character and the natural setting of the stream.

Landscape and orientation in Penkow

At the B192 junction, roads lead towards Land Fleesensee, Waren, Malchow and Kisserow. These named directions provide an initial sense of Penkow’s location in the region. The village pond offers a distinctive local landmark, while the Klostermühlbach stream draws attention to the landscape and the environmental protection measures that have been implemented. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether the village character, the natural surroundings or both should shape your stay.

Different conservation priorities also meet in the surrounding area. Near Kisserow, nine prehistoric burial mounds are protected as archaeological monuments. Along the Kisserow–Walow road, an area of approximately one hectare containing rare globeflowers is protected as a nature conservation area. The burial mounds point to archaeological heritage; the protected area adds a botanical dimension. Both places are in the vicinity of Penkow, not in the village centre.

History and regional points of interest

Penkow was first documented in 1309. For several centuries, the village’s history was closely connected with Malchow Abbey. This long-standing connection adds a historical context to the landscape today. If you are planning your trip around local history and nature, the village pond, the restored Klostermühlbach stream and the nearby protected areas can offer different points of interest.

Göhren-Lebbin is a separate point of reference for regional comparisons and a broader travel destination. There, the approximately two-kilometre-long bee nature trail follows a little-used agricultural track between Göhren-Lebbin and Kirch Poppentin. It offers walkers interesting information, and an observation tower provides views of the natural surroundings. Along the trail, the bee Holli guides children through the puzzle “On your wings, get set, go!” The trail, puzzle and observation tower each offer a different focus for an outing.

The fieldstone church in Poppentin is also part of Göhren-Lebbin: Poppentin is a district of the municipality. The listed Protestant church is a rectangular fieldstone building dating from the 13th century. In its cemetery stands the Tiele-Winckler family tomb, with a copy of Bertel Thorvaldsen’s “Christus” erected in 1890. The architecture and tomb combine medieval church construction with a later memorial.

Different highlights in Göhren-Lebbin

Göhren-Lebbin lies directly on Lake Fleesensee and Lake Kölpinsee. In the district of Untergöhren, the shores of Lake Fleesensee have sunbathing lawns and bathing areas. There are also direct water connections from Göhren-Lebbin to the Müritz and Lake Plauer, with no locks along the way. These lakeside features differ from Penkow’s village pond and stream and may influence your choice of a regional base.

For a walk, the Göhren-Lebbin nature experience circular trail starts at the former manor house, “Schloss Blücher”, and returns to Göhren-Lebbin via an avenue. Golf enthusiasts will also find the Golf Fleesensee golf and tennis centre there, with five courses: two short 9-hole courses, a par-67 course and two 18-hole courses. The walking trail and golf courses offer further ways to shape your stay in this broader travel destination.

Göhren-Lebbin offers a point of comparison of its own, with a nature trail, protected architecture, a walking trail and lakeside features. Decide which of these matters most to your travel plans, and focus your accommodation search accordingly.
