Torgelow am See: Nature, Castle Park and History
Accommodation in Torgelow Am See
Torgelow am See brings together a protected waterbird landscape and striking reminders of different historical periods. The Heistersteine lie in the Seeblänken woodland, the castle is surrounded by an extensive landscape park, and a historic bread oven recalls local building history. If you would like to combine nature and cultural history, you will find a range of themes here to help plan your trip.
Birdlife and the Landscape around Lake Torgelower See
The area around Lake Torgelower See is a protected landscape, particularly for the protection of waterbirds. Birdlife is therefore one of the defining natural features of the area. Schloss Torgelow has an extensive landscape park, designed to incorporate the surrounding countryside. The park is mainly home to protected waterbirds.
An island around 150 to 200 years old lies in the northern part of Lake Torgelower See. Cormorants have settled there since 1972; the island is also a nesting site for mallards, gadwalls and other duck species.
The Heistersteine, the Castle and the Bread Oven
The Heistersteine are located in the Seeblänken woodland near Torgelow am See. They were built between 3000 and 1800 BCE and served as a communal burial site for a kinship group. The Heistersteine are therefore a testament to the history of burial practices.
Schloss Torgelow offers a glimpse into another historical period: it was built to plans by Otto March and inaugurated in 1904. While the Heistersteine date back to prehistoric times, the castle’s inauguration year provides a specific reference point in architectural history. Both offer different ways to explore the history of the area.
The Historic Bread Oven also connects architectural history with local tradition. It was built on a historic site using building materials salvaged during the demolition of the former brickworks and around 200 years old. The bread oven is located on Backofenstraße. At village festivals, bread is baked in the Historic Bread Oven—a local link to food culture that goes beyond the physical traces of the past.
