Dierhagen – Baltic Sea Beach, Harbour and History
Accommodation in Dierhagen
Dierhagen is located at the entrance to the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. As a Baltic Sea resort, the town is defined by an approximately seven-kilometre-long, white fine-sand beach; it is up to 30 metres wide. The harbour, local history and seasonal activities also give your stay different focal points. Dierhagen can be reached by car, bicycle, plane or on foot.
Beach and coastal areas
The beach sections are designated differently: some are naturist areas, while others are dog beaches. Check the signs on site, as designations may change seasonally. There are beach access points for visitors with mobility impairments; accessible toilets are available at some beach entrances. Their availability may vary from one entrance to another. If these facilities are important for your plans, check the relevant beach entrance before your visit.
With its length and width, the fine-sand beach offers a concrete point of reference when choosing the focus of your holiday. The designated areas also help you distinguish between beach sections according to their intended uses. This makes it possible to discover the beach as a distinct part of Dierhagen’s character without losing sight of the town’s other attractions.
Harbour and waterways
There are also various options for waterway hikers and trips on the Bodden lagoon. The waterway hikers’ rest area in Dierhagen Dorf has 54 berths. Dierhagen Harbour and Waterway Hikers’ Rest Area offers modern sanitary facilities and a boat slipway. The Historic Salt Harbour in Dändorf lies on the western shore of the Saaler Bodden and is now a popular resting place for waterway hikers.
Passenger ships operated by Kruse and Voß also depart from Dierhagen Harbour for Bodden lagoon tours in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. These include the MS “Ostseebad Wustrow”, the MS “Bültenkieker” and the MS “Boddenkieker”. Routes and timetables are seasonal; check them before your trip. Berths, harbour facilities and passenger tours are different aspects to consider when planning your visit.
Local history and culture
In Dändorf, the historic Salt Road has been preserved and can be seen as a historic monument alongside the old captains’ houses. The Dändorf History House presents changing exhibitions on the history of the Baltic Sea resort of Dierhagen. It is open to visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May to October. Check seasonal opening hours before your visit.
The church in Dierhagen Dorf houses the model ship “Vergatte von Dierhagen 1799”. The church is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May to September; here too, it is advisable to check seasonal opening hours before your visit. Dierhagen Spa Park was completed in 1998 and is located right next to the Haus des Gastes.
For music, there is the Sunset Piano Concert: it takes place in Dierhagen every year in late July or early August and is performed by Lutz Gerlach and Ulrike Mai. Check the current programme for your travel dates. This regular time of year offers a different point of reference from the seasonal opening hours of the church and History House.
Activities with a seasonal programme
From May to October, the “Hike through the Great Moor” tour combines a bicycle ride with a hike through the Ribnitz Great Moor. It starts at the Haus des Gastes in Dierhagen Strand. As this is a seasonal programme, check the current dates in advance. Combining cycling and hiking gives the tour a different character from visiting exhibitions or spending time at the beach.
The region’s cultural landscape
The wider cultural landscape may also be of interest when planning your trip: Western Pomerania-Rügen is known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival. The district of Western Pomerania-Rügen has an estimated 60 or so museums. These regional attractions broaden the perspective beyond the specific places and events in Dierhagen.
