Boiensdorf: Coastal Nature on the Salzhaff
Accommodation in Boiensdorf
Boiensdorf lies in a gently rolling landscape of fields, patches of woodland, and meadows on the Salzhaff. Natural shorelines and views of shallow waters give days spent in nature and by the coast their own distinctive character. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: wildlife watching and beach walks, swimming and water sports, or cultural discoveries. For broader trip planning, the larger destination of Nordwestmecklenburg offers a comparison of landscapes: in the north, it includes the “Nordwestmecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area, and in the south, the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” This north–south division highlights the contrast between rolling hills and a lake district.
Landscape and Birdlife on the Boiensdorfer Werder
The Boiensdorfer Werder Landscape Protection Area is largely undeveloped. Natural stretches of shoreline and occasional steep coasts are part of its character, along with salt meadows, lagoons, and canals. Parts of the salt meadows are grazed extensively by cattle. Along the coast, open areas and grazed land meet a variety of water features.
The agricultural land on the Boiensdorfer Werder is an important stopover site for migratory birds, including mute swans and common shelducks. Its importance as a stopover site can vary seasonally, so the birdlife is not the same at every time of year. Swimming and long beach walks are also ways to enjoy nature in the protected area. Wildlife watching and walks along the shore thus offer alternatives to a classic day at the beach.
Shallow Waters, Views, and Activities
The Boiensdorf surf spot is a shallow-water area with no large waves or currents. With westerly to northeasterly winds, the standing area is 200 metres wide. Water conditions depend on the weather. Check them before your visit if you want to plan your activity accordingly.
From a viewpoint, you can see across the Salzhaff, over Wustrow, and onward to the open Baltic Sea. The landscape around Boiensdorf also includes views across shallow waters towards Wustrow and the Langenwerder bird sanctuary island. Visitors from outside Boiensdorf can use the beach slipway for a fee; fee arrangements may change. Boiensdorf is also considered a starting point for fishing trips.
Art and Milling History in Stove
The Stove Art House has a sculpture garden and includes a straw-bale and clay house built as a studio in 2016. The sculpture garden and studio building offer different artistic experiences: outdoor works sit alongside a distinctive building style.
Stove is also home to a Dutch-style windmill dating from 1889. Its wind-powered mechanism and milling equipment have been preserved. During demonstrations, visitors can follow the process of turning wheat and rye into flour and then making bread and baked goods from it. Demonstrations may vary. The mill thus combines historic technology with a hands-on look at the journey from grain to finished baked goods.
