Gressow has two appealing sides: a brick church with remarkable historical details and surroundings where Lake Tressow and Jassewitz Woods each offer their own natural attractions. From architectural and commemorative heritage to natural trails, there are plenty of ways to explore. When planning your visit, consider whether your trip will focus more on history, nature or a mix of both.

Church and Historic Traces

In its present form, the church in Gressow is a typical brick church dating from the mid-14th century. Its Baroque altar was created by J. F. Wilde in 1718. This brings together two distinct historical periods in one place: the medieval church and its Baroque furnishings. For travellers interested in culture, this contrast offers a tangible point of interest.

Tisa v. d. Schulenburg designed a memorial at Gressow Church. It adds a distinctive note of remembrance alongside the building and altar. Historic landmarks can also be found outside the church: the manor house at Dorfanger 3–4 and its park, as well as the poplar avenue near Käselow and Beidendorf. The selection therefore includes different kinds of monuments, from sacred architecture to an avenue of trees.

Another precisely located landmark is a half-mile stone. It stands at the entrance to Gressow from the direction of Wismar, on the eastern side of the former B 105 route at kilometre 134.84. Its exact location sets the stone apart from the other historic traces and connects it directly to the old road alignment.

Lake Tressow and the Surrounding Area

The cemetery in Gressow is located directly around the church. A bench there invites you to pause and take in the view of Lake Tressow. Church and nature come together in this setting, while the lake view does not detract from the cemetery’s character.

The area around Gressow, including Lake Tressow and its wet meadows, lies within the “Jameler Wald, Tressower See und Moorsee” Special Area of Conservation (DE 2133-302). Natural hiking, horse-riding and cycling trails run around the lake through this designated local recreation area. The trails offer different ways to explore the surroundings: on foot, on horseback or by bicycle.

The nearby Jassewitz Woods offer a different natural highlight. This 200- to 250-year-old pollarded hornbeam forest is one of the last remnants of this historic form of woodland management in Germany. Alongside the trails by the lake, it offers a place whose significance lies in its age and its connection to the history of forestry.

Choose the Right Focus

When looking for accommodation, you can use these differences to make a simple choice: should your trip focus mainly on historic places, or more on nature and outdoor activities? If your travel group has different interests, agree on the preferred focus together.
