Hohen Wieschendorf brings together the Baltic coast, an old estate village and a diverse landscape on the headland. Sandy beaches, coastal paths, birdlife and local history give your stay a range of possible focuses. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by considering whether you would like to focus mainly on coastal views, nature watching, golf or the history of the village.

Beach paths and views on the headland

The sandy beach around the marina is equipped with beach chairs. On the headland, a narrow walking path runs either directly along the beach or above the steep coast. Both routes offer views across Wismar Bay, towards the island of Poel and west across Wohlenberger Wiek. Cliffs define the western and northern parts of the headland. For a walk, you can choose between the path by the water and the higher route, taking in different perspectives on the coastal landscape.

Nature here is also closely tied to the location: Hohen Wieschendorf Marina lies within a Natura 2000 protected area. North of the headland, mute swans, dabbling ducks, red-breasted mergansers and gulls gather in the shallow water during the summer half of the year. East of the landing stage is a closed salt meadow that is particularly well suited to birdwatching. These bird species are a seasonal feature; bear in mind the location of the salt meadow and that access is prohibited when finding your way around.

Plan around the marina season

The marina is closed from 15 October to 15 April to protect resting and overwintering birds, and boats may not enter during this period. From mid-April to mid-October, 100 berths and a crane and slipway are available. If you are visiting by boat, check the stated seasonal dates in advance. These date ranges are also relevant when choosing when to travel: this helps distinguish a stay with views of the marina from a planned visit by boat.

Golf, local history and seasonal experiences

Bades Huk Golf Club has an 18-hole championship course on a peninsula that extends into the Baltic Sea. Golf thus offers a distinct focus alongside the beach and coastal path. If you are interested, you can take the course into account when planning your stay.

Hohen Wieschendorf is considered an old estate village. The estate was owned by the Bade family from 1778 to 1884; the manor house was owned by the Glantz family from 1912 to 1945. Until the end of the 19th century, Wilhelm Bade organised the first cruises to the Nordic countries and polar regions in the Arctic. Alongside its coastal landscape, this history gives the village another dimension, from its estate heritage to the early Arctic voyages. If you are here in December, there is also a seasonal experience at Hohen Wieschendorf: every year, Erdbeerhof Glantz sells freshly sawn Christmas trees and offers visitors the chance to cut their own.

Accommodation and planning your stay

Hohen Wieschendorf is developing into the main tourist destination in the municipality of Hohenkirchen. Local offerings include the marina, Bades Huk, a newly developed holiday apartment complex and other holiday accommodation. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore take your interests in the coast, nature, golf or local history into account, rather than focusing your stay on just one activity. Cycling is another way to explore the area: the cycle path at Eggerswiek starts in the centre of Hohen Wieschendorf and is signposted towards Beckerwitz. This gives you a choice of both individual seasonal experiences and different ways to discover the village and its landscape.
