Dargen: Lagoon, Technology and Nature
Accommodation in Dargen
Dargen lies in the Achterland of Usedom, right on the Kleines Haff lagoon. Its location gives the destination a clear connection to water and landscape. At the same time, technology history, art, everyday life in the GDR, wildlife and landscape development are distinct themes here.
Technology and Art
The Kachlin wind-powered pumping station was built in 1920 and is a technical monument near Lake Kachlin. Its construction date gives the cultural theme a specific historical reference. The Usedom Art Farm in Katschow offers a different focus: this cultural venue was created by painter and sculptor Roland Oesker. The technical monument and the art farm thus offer different perspectives on technology history and art.
GDR History and Cuisine
The Dargen / Usedom GDR Museum Association was founded in 1997 on the grounds of a former agricultural trading cooperative. Its main exhibits include GDR motorcycles, engine technology, tractors, NVA technology, ambulances, cars and fire service equipment. The range, from engines and vehicles to technology used in various fields, offers several ways to explore GDR technology. Individual displays may change.
The museum’s association restaurant serves typical GDR dishes and homemade cake. As the menu may change, check current availability before your visit.
Bison Park and Bison Enclosure
The visitor trail at Bison Park provides information about Usedom’s wildlife, the development of nature and the history of the landscape. Bison Park in Prätenow, a district of Dargen, includes three hectares of unmanaged natural forest; more than 70 bird species nest in the enclosures.
The bison enclosure in Prätenow on Usedom opened in summer 2004 as a breeding and viewing facility run by NABU Germany. Visitors can observe European bison at close range; the enclosure also includes a bird house. It also provides information about European bison and conservation work aimed at reintroducing the animals to native forests.
The two sites have different focuses to help guide your choice: Bison Park’s visitor trail explores the development of nature and the history of the landscape, while the bison enclosure offers the chance to observe European bison at close range.
Exploring the Thurbruch on Foot or by Bike
The Thurbruch is a broad, flat landscape shaped by drainage ditches, meadows, pastures, and rapeseed and grain fields. You can explore it on foot or by bicycle. The Usedom Traditions Cycling Tour passes through Dargen, Kachlin and Katschow. Check the latest route information before setting out, as route details may change.
In the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald destination
Other independent cultural destinations in Vorpommern-Greifswald offer a broader view of the region. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry of 1554, a unique cultural and historical document from the Reformation period. The Juliett U-461 is a museum in Peenemünde Harbour and can be explored on a tour; check current visiting options beforehand.
