Goldberg: Lakes, Mills and Brick Gothic
Accommodation in Goldberg
Goldberg combines varied natural landscapes with architectural history and remembrance. The town can be explored from different perspectives: from the observation tower on Hellberg to the bathing beach on Lake Goldberg, as well as the town hall, church, mills and memorials. To plan your trip, you can first consider whether landscape, time by the water or historical themes should shape your stay.
Landscape and summer outings
The area around the town of Goldberg is characterised by numerous lakes, attractive forests, and a varied landscape of meadows and fields. Large parts of the town lie within the Nossentiner Schwinzer Heide Nature Park. Water, forest and open spaces lend the surrounding area a range of distinctive landscapes.
At Hellberg, the steel observation tower offers views of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s oldest cherry tree avenue and the expanse of the Schwinzer Heide. In summer, the tower is a rewarding destination for family outings and hikes. The view combines a distinctive feature of the cultural landscape with a sweeping vista over the heath.
There is a bathing beach on Lake Goldberg. This offers two different ways to enjoy an outing: spending time by the water or taking a summer hike with views of the cherry avenue and heath. Which option best suits your stay depends on whether you would rather focus on the lake or on walking and the views.
Architectural history, mills and memorials
Goldberg Town Hall was built in 1828; its small Neo-Gothic tower was added 25 years later. Goldberg Church was built in 1290 in the Brick Gothic style. The two buildings offer different historical perspectives: at the town hall, you can place the later addition in context, while the church’s construction date and style connect it to Brick Gothic architecture.
The mills, too, offer a range of technical and cultural-historical points of interest. The Goldberg Natural History Museum is housed in a former watermill, which is a technical monument. The Goldberg gallery-style Dutch windmill is one of the largest Dutch windmills in Mecklenburg. Thus, two different types of mills stand out: a former watermill with protected monument status and a windmill notable for its size within Mecklenburg.
The memorial commemorating the Franco-Prussian War features a Victoria by sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch. The war memorial “The Mourner” honours the people of Goldberg who fell in the First World War. The memorials refer to different historical subjects: one depicts Victoria, while the other commemorates the people of Goldberg who fell in the First World War.
