Passow: Swimming Area, Cycling Routes and Castle Art
Accommodation in Passow
Passow combines a day of swimming at Lake Passow with circular routes through the countryside and a castle whose artistic world reaches back to Pompeii. Water, activity and culture each offer a different focus, making it easy to plan your stay around your own travel interests. The swimming area is a specific destination by the lake, while the circular routes offer exercise and scenery, and Passow Castle provides a cultural highlight through its architecture and paintings.
Swimming Area at Lake Passow
From Passow, follow the signs in town to reach the swimming area at Lake Passow. As signage may change, it is worth checking the directions on site before setting off. The swimming area has a jetty, toilets, a partly shaded sunbathing lawn and a playground. Swimming lessons are also offered; check before your trip whether the course schedule suits your dates. For families, the playground is a useful addition to time spent by the water.
Cycling and Hiking Routes Around Passow
Cyclists can choose between two circular routes of different lengths. Cycling and Hiking Route 2 from Passow is about 15 km long and passes through Weisin, Bobzin Lock and Lübz before returning to Passow. From Passow, it goes past the beach and through the Alte Elde Nature Reserve towards Weisin. Cycling and Hiking Route 1 is a circular route of about 26 km via Charlottenhof, Zahren, Kressin, Daschow, Kuppentin and Weisin, returning to Passow. A well-maintained cycle path runs along Route 1 beside the Elde-Müritz Waterway. The different distances and waypoints give you concrete information to help choose a cycling tour.
The Alte Elde Nature Reserve is also well suited to exploring on foot. The circular hiking trail around Lake Passow takes about 60 minutes. This means you can choose a walking route with an approximate duration or either of two cycling routes with their respective distances, depending on your plans for the day.
Passow Castle: Palladianism and Pompeii
Passow Castle was built in the Palladian style, an artistic movement shaped by Palladio and inspired by the rediscovery of Roman villas. The upper floor features murals based on designs from the Villa of the Vettii in Pompeii. The dome is painted with allegorical motifs from the animal and plant worlds of different Pompeian periods. The castle thus brings together a connection to Roman villa architecture and a decorative scheme featuring motifs from Pompeii. Visitors interested in architecture and historical art will find two clearly defined themes here: its Palladian style and the Pompeian paintings.
Another Castle Highlight in the Broader Ludwigslust-Parchim Destination
In the broader Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, Ludwigslust Palace offers its own cultural highlight. It was the former residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace also stands at the heart of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town layout, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. While Passow Castle is associated with Palladianism and Pompeian paintings, Ludwigslust is defined by its history as a ducal residence and its late Baroque town-and-park ensemble.
