Suckow lies between the hills of the Ruhner Berge and the Mooster Wiese plain. The village combines a layered past with distinctive local landmarks: its fieldstone church, memorial stone and chestnut avenue each offer a different reason to explore Suckow. For those travelling by car, its proximity to the A 24 and the available motorway entrance and exit are relevant.

Traces of the Village’s History

Suckow was first mentioned in a document in 1328 under the name “Sucowe”. From the Middle Ages, the village was divided between Mecklenburg and Brandenburg. As a result, until the 20th century there was a municipality called Suckow both in the Mecklenburg district of Parchim and in the Brandenburg district of Ostprignitz.

The village church is a fieldstone hall church, surrounded by a fieldstone wall and located near the B 321. The church building and churchyard are visible from the road. Its origins may date back to the 14th century; the present building is dated to the second quarter of the 16th century. A beam dated 1588 suggests that the church tower may have been added to the previously towerless building around 1587. The church also contains a Neo-Gothic altarpiece depicting the Crucifixion, created by artist Thomas Fischer in 1867.

Near the intersection of Schulstraße and Dorfstraße, a red brick memorial stone commemorates the death march of prisoners from Sachsenhausen concentration camp in April 1945. The traditional legends offer a very different note: a large black dog features in several stories from Suckow. Together, these places and motifs tell of different aspects of the village’s history.

Walks and Cycling Route

The chestnut avenue leads from Suckow towards Mentin. It is about one kilometre long, and its trees make it a pleasant place for a walk. The condition of the trees may change over time. The avenue offers a distinctive local setting for a short time outdoors, while Cycling Route 1 places Suckow within a longer route.

Cycling Route 1 runs from Marnitz via Ruhner Berg, Griebow, Mentin and Suckow, returning to Marnitz. Those who include the route in their travel plans can consider Suckow one of the places along it.

The Ruhner Berge Landscape

The landscape of the Ruhner Berge, east of Suckow, has been designated a landscape conservation area since 1994. The nature trail in the Ruhner Berge explains the landscape’s formation and its former uses with information panels and 23 labelled glacial erratics. The Ruhner Tower is also a distinctive viewpoint: its 32.5-metre-high viewing platform can be reached via 180 steps and offers views across Mecklenburg and Brandenburg.
