Neuenkirchen (Rügen) is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, situated on the Lebbin Peninsula in western Rügen. A Gothic brick church, protected nature and a hiking trail that starts in the village offer different ways to shape your stay. Depending on your interests, you can focus on church art, landscapes or outdoor activities.

A church with Gothic and Renaissance details

The Protestant Church of St. Mary Magdalene is the parish church of Neuenkirchen. Its present Gothic brick form was built between 1380 and 1450. A medieval holy-water stoup is set into a fieldstone at the south portal. Inside the church is a Renaissance pulpit dating from 1567, originally from St. Mary's Church in Bergen.

The bell also has a long history: the bell, originally dated to 1367, is considered the oldest on Rügen; it was recast in 1901. The church is freely accessible at all times. As visitor information may change, check the latest notices before your visit.

Nature on the Lebbin Peninsula

Large parts of the Lebbin Peninsula, where Neuenkirchen is located, belong to the Tetzitzer See Nature Reserve. The area features salt meadows, brackish-water reed beds and diverse woodlands. Cranes and geese can often be spotted in the reserve; sightings are seasonal and therefore cannot be reliably planned.

The Johann-Jacob-Grümbke observation tower on Hoch Hilgor offers views as far as Cape Arkona and Hiddensee. The Bodden Panorama Trail starts in Neuenkirchen, is 24 kilometres long and extends to Neu Mukran. This offers different ways to enjoy nature: the trail can be taken as a longer hike, while the tower provides a viewpoint with sweeping views.

Water activities and a small shop

If you are considering an activity on the water instead of a longer hike, the marina in nearby Vieregge offers stand-up paddleboard and motorboat rentals. Availability may change, so check the current options in advance.

Neuenkirchen has a small traditional shop known as a “Tante-Emma” shop. As retail availability can change, it is advisable to check the current selection if you have a specific shopping need.

Neuenkirchen as a destination for your stay

If these topics are central to your stay, you can choose Neuenkirchen as your destination when searching for accommodation. If you are travelling with family or with people who have different preferences, it is best to decide in advance which interests should take priority. You can then compare specific accommodation options based on your needs.

Vorpommern-Rügen in a wider context

The district of Vorpommern-Rügen also offers a broader cultural context: among other things, it is known for the Störtebeker Festival. The district is estimated to have around 60 museums. If you want to plan your stay around more than the attractions of a single place, you can also consider this wider cultural setting.
