Ückeritz between the Achterwasser and the Baltic Sea
Accommodation in Ückeritz
Ückeritz lies on the island of Usedom, between the Achterwasser lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The village combines diverse coastal landscapes with nature trails and water sports, as well as a village character that recalls its history as a fishing and farming village.
Beach and coastal landscape
Ückeritz beach is about seven kilometres long, has fine sand and slopes gently towards the sea. Along the coast, steep and flat sections alternate, with shady beech forests lining the beach. At the steep coast, a long wooden staircase leads down to the beach and offers views of the Baltic Sea.
The beach has a designated nudist area and a section that is also accessible to dogs. The promenade largely retains the character of a natural walkway; there are cafés and snack bars nearby. If you want to use a particular beach facility, these designated areas can help you find your way. The cafés and snack bars are possible stops for a break during a visit to the promenade.
Nature trails and water sports
The Wockninsee nature trail starts at Seebad Ückeritz railway station and runs for about three kilometres through the Wockninsee nature reserve. Information boards describe the area’s flora and fauna. A small bridge takes the path across the Aalgrabe, a moor channel between Lake Wockninsee and the Achterwasser lagoon. The route therefore focuses both on the area’s nature and on its landscape features.
The nature trail exploring soils begins right by the Usedom Geological Garden. The roughly one-hour circular walk covers 1.5 kilometres and explores the world of soils. This gives it a different focus from the Wockninsee trail: those particularly interested in soils will find a dedicated theme here, while the Wockninsee trail covers flora and fauna, among other things. The routes can also be compared by length: the soil trail is shorter than the roughly three-kilometre route at Wockninsee.
Ückeritz marina is located on the Achterwasser lagoon. It offers around 50 berths for boats with a draught of less than one metre, as well as toilets, electrical hookups and parking for cars and motorcycles. A sailing and surfing school is based at the marina. Beginners and children can hire boats, surfboards and other equipment there. Windsport Usedom also offers sailing, windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding lessons in Ückeritz.
Village history, events and cycling
In the village area of Ückeritz, towards the Achterwasser lagoon, you’ll find low houses, often with thatched roofs. They reflect the character of the former fishing and farming village. An exhibition at the Haus des Gastes commemorates Usedom’s painters every autumn. During the warmer months, concerts and various events are held on the waterfront promenade, including Whitsun celebrations and a summer carnival. If you want to attend a particular festival or concert, check the current dates before your trip.
Cycling trips are another option locally: the “Amber Spas Tour” is a guided bike tour through the Amber Spas. Bicycles and e-bikes can be hired or delivered in Ückeritz. For your cycling trip, you can choose the guided tour through the Amber Spas or hire a bicycle or e-bike in Ückeritz, or have one delivered.
When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay, then check the locations of individual options against the activities you have planned. A holiday centred on beach time, nature trails, water sports or events will have different priorities in each case. Clarifying these before comparing options can help you focus your search on the trip you have in mind.
