Düsseldorf: Green Spaces, Culture and Cuisine
Accommodation in Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf offers a range of ways to shape your stay, from green spaces and culinary discoveries to culture and getting around the city. The Hofgarten, Carlsplatz, Little Tokyo and Benrath Palace each offer a different experience. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide which places and themes will be most important to your travel plans. The suggestions below show the many ways to explore Düsseldorf.
Green spaces and sculptures in the Hofgarten
The Hofgarten is Düsseldorf’s oldest public park and its most important inner-city green space. It was laid out as a public promenade, covers around 27 hectares and features a large body of water as well as numerous sculptures. Water, art and the extensive park offer a different focus from the city’s culinary and museum experiences. If you plan to make a walk a highlight of your itinerary, this is an ideal place to focus on greenery, water and sculptures.
Culinary discoveries in Düsseldorf
Carlsplatz is a destination for food lovers. There, you can discover Düsseldorf home-style cooking as well as Italian, Indian, French and Persian dishes. Düsseldorf’s traditional breweries offer a different way to experience the local food and drink culture: they uphold traditional brewing methods and bring brewery culture to life. The Kasematten along the Rhine embankment promenade offer dining with a view.
Düsseldorf’s Little Tokyo invites you to discover Japanese culture and cuisine. Along Immermannstraße and the surrounding side streets, you’ll find ramen and sushi, izakaya tapas bars, grill restaurants and Japanese cafés. The culinary selection ranges from home-style cooking and brewery culture to a variety of international cuisines and Japanese specialties. Offerings at individual venues may change.
Museums and special experiences
The Museum of Garden Art at Benrath Palace is devoted to European garden art in all its facets and provides an overview of around 2,500 years of garden history. Its collections are displayed across around 2,000 square metres and 41 rooms. The Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum offers a different thematic focus: it combines a zoo, aquarium and natural history museum, and regularly hosts special exhibitions. Current exhibitions may vary. The Schlossturm (Castle Tower) stands on Burgplatz in Düsseldorf’s Old Town.
For a food-focused experience, take the guided “Sushi, Sake and Japanese Lifestyle” tour of Little Tokyo. It lasts two hours and includes four tastings. Check the tour format and availability before booking.
Benrath Palace and getting there
The park at Benrath Palace is open to the public free of charge; check whether any temporary restrictions are in place before your visit. The U72 runs from Ratingen through the city centre to the “Schloss Benrath” stop. The S6, RE1 and RE5 also run to Benrath S-Bahn station. From there, it’s a ten-minute walk to the palace. Routes and connections may change, so it’s a good idea to check before travelling.
For travel from the airport, the S11 is another option to consider: it connects Düsseldorf Airport’s terminal directly with Düsseldorf Central Station, and the journey takes about twelve minutes. Here, too, check the connection for your travel date.
Explore Düsseldorf by bike
The approximately 20-kilometre Climate Cycling Tour Düsseldorf provides information about climate protection and climate adaptation projects. The RheinRadWeg North Rhine-Westphalia offers a different scale: it runs through Düsseldorf and, within North Rhine-Westphalia, stretches from the Drachenfels in the Siebengebirge to Emmerich am Rhein. The Climate Cycling Tour focuses on climate and the city, while the RheinRadWeg connects Düsseldorf to a longer route through North Rhine-Westphalia. Check the current route before setting out, as route details may change.
When planning your accommodation, start with the activities you’ve already decided on. If Benrath Palace is one of your destinations, factor in the transport connections and the walk from the S-Bahn station. For days focused on parks, food or culture, make a note of the places you’d like to visit and check which accommodation location best suits your plans.
