In spring, the yellow daffodil meadows of the upper Olef Valley give you a special reason to go hiking in Hollerath. In the North Eifel Nature Park, wild daffodils bloom every year from late March to early May; the exact timing depends on the weather. Two signposted circular trails lead through the daffodil landscape and start at the Hollerather Knie car park on the B265 near Hellenthal-Hollerath. This combines the seasonal appeal of the yellow flowers with a concrete opportunity to explore the landscape on foot.

Experience the Daffodil Trails

You can hike both circular trails independently or with an expert guide. So you can choose whether to set off on your own or opt for a guided experience. Both trails start at the Hollerather Knie car park; you do not need to plan to start from a different location when switching between the two circular trails. Instead, your choice can depend on how you want to explore. If you are planning with a travel group, you can discuss in advance whether you would rather explore the trails independently or have an expert guide. The yellow daffodil meadows remain the shared scenic highlight.

Choose a Hike to Suit Your Interests

Hellenthal has more than 220 km of marked hiking trails. Route III focuses on geology and mining history. This theme combines a look at the landscape’s composition and formation with the history of mining. It offers a different focus from the Hollerath circular trails, whose distinctive feature is the yellow daffodils of the upper Olef Valley. When choosing a route, you can start with the subject that interests you: would you prefer the seasonal daffodil landscape, or are you more interested in a route focused on geology and mining history?

Plan Around the Flowering Season

Daffodils bloom annually from late March to early May, with the weather affecting the exact timing. If the flowers are the main reason for your trip, plan your visit within this seasonal window and check for the latest information on the bloom shortly beforehand. This leaves room for weather-dependent changes, rather than relying on a specific day.

Check for Trail Detours

Two detour notices are important when planning your route. There is currently a signposted detour on the red route, related to wind farm construction scheduled from March 2026 to around April 2028. The detour on Route III in the Hollerath area is also related to wind farm construction; the period runs from February 2026 to around spring 2028. If you are planning to hike either route, check the current trail route shortly before setting out. The stated end dates are approximate; it is also advisable to check the latest route information after spring 2028. This way, when choosing your hike, you can take into account both the theme of the trail and the detour that applies during your planned visit.
