In Schnorrenberg, you can discover local cultural history and mining-related themes. St. Anthony’s Chapel and the pilgrimage cross provide historical landmarks; hiking trails, designated natural monuments and forest activities offer further perspectives. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses: local history, a longer hike or an event related to the forest.

Chapel and Pilgrimage Cross: Schnorrenberg’s History

St. Anthony’s Chapel in Schnorrenberg grew out of an initiative launched in 1890 to build a small shrine. This led to a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, which Pastor Giesen from Rescheid consecrated on 26 August 1896. This development offers a tangible thread through local cultural history: from an early plan to the dedication and the precisely dated consecration of the chapel.

A different period in time is reflected in Schnorrenberg’s pilgrimage cross. It was erected in 1982 and is made of red-painted wood. In August 2023, it was taken down for restoration and put back in its original location in November of that year. The chapel’s story reaches back to an initiative from the late 19th century; for the cross, its erection and return after restoration are important points in time.

Hiking Trails and a Landscape Shaped by Mining History

The 25.5 km Geological and Mining History Nature Trail, Hiking Route II, passes by Schnorrenberg. Its length provides a concrete measure for anyone considering a longer hike as part of their trip. In the municipality of Hellenthal, visitors can hike more than 220 km of marked trails through forests, valleys and uplands. In addition, there are three signposted Geo-Routes totalling 75 km, connecting points of geological and mining-history interest. You can choose between one individually named route and several Geo-Routes with a combined total length.

North of Schnorrenberg, on the slope of the Eschsiefen, lie the spoil heaps of the Wohlfahrt Mine. They are designated as a natural monument and add a distinct landscape perspective to the mining-history theme.

The Hellenthal municipal area includes species-rich mat-grass meadows, montane hay meadows, and dry and wet heathlands with diverse, insect-rich vegetation. These habitats broaden the view beyond forests, valleys and uplands to include a variety of open landscapes.

Forest Activities and Travel Planning

At Schnorrenberg 75 in Hellenthal-Schnorrenberg, individual WaldSpĂĽrungen (forest experiences) and open sessions on forest bathing and edible wild plants are offered; appointments can be arranged on request. This offers a different focus from the signposted trails: instead of choosing a route length, you can explore a forest-related topic and enquire about an appointment.

Bus route 838 runs from Hellenthal via Reifferscheid and Grube Wohlfahrt to Schnorrenberg. If you plan to use this route, check the timetable for your travel dates so you can fit the connection into your daily schedule.
