Mechernich combines impressive traces of the past with outdoor activities. The Kommern Open-Air Museum brings rural life over several centuries to life; the Eifel Aqueduct is a reminder of Roman engineering. In Kommern, half-timbered houses and historic buildings define the town centre, while the wildlife park, toboggan run and events offer further options for outings.

Roman traces and rural life

The Eifel Aqueduct was probably built at the end of the first century AD and is one of the largest Roman constructions north of the Alps. More than 25 kilometres of its route pass through the Mechernich municipal area. A section of the main Eifel Aqueduct line to Cologne can be viewed right beside the road “Am Römerkanal”. This makes it possible to explore the Roman heritage both along the route through the municipal area and at a visible section of the aqueduct.

The LVR Open-Air Museum Kommern – Rhineland State Museum of Folklore – offers insights into rural life from the 15th to the 19th century through around 75 buildings. These include farmhouses, windmills, workshops and village communal buildings. The different types of buildings illustrate various aspects of everyday life at the time and provide a broad thematic framework for a museum visit.

Half-timbered houses and historic townscapes

The Old Church of St John is a landmark of Mechernich. It stands high above the town and is visible from far away. The historic centre of Kommern is also an inviting place to stroll. Alongside Mechernich, Kommern is the largest settlement in the municipal area; its centre contains the Rhineland’s largest continuous ensemble of half-timbered houses. A castle dating from the 15th to the 18th century, a neo-Gothic church and numerous places to eat and drink add to the townscape. Half-timbered houses, ecclesiastical architecture and other historic buildings stand side by side here, offering various points of interest on a walk.

Walks and outdoor activities

The Kommern wildlife park has spacious paths, places to rest and viewing platforms by the feeding areas, inviting visitors to take a walk around the park. There is also a large nature-themed playground with a zip line, climbing frames and slides. A walk with opportunities for wildlife viewing and time on the playground can therefore be enjoyed as separate parts of a visit to the park.

At the Eifeltor Adventure Park in Kommern, visitors can ride the toboggan run, which is 680 metres long. This seasonal attraction is open from 1 April to 31 October; check that it is operating before you travel. The toboggan run is therefore a clearly defined seasonal option alongside the year-round sights and historic townscapes described here.

The “Mechernicher 8” route connects sights and leisure facilities via two circular trails. The two routes can be combined, so you can plan either a single circuit or a combination of both. The Eifel Aqueduct, the open-air museum and the historic townscapes offer different highlights from a walk in the wildlife park or the seasonal toboggan run; choose according to which of these experiences you would like to focus on during your stay.

Events and hiking options

Satzvey Castle hosts a variety of events throughout the year. These include a children’s summer theatre, a Witches’ Night, a murder-mystery dinner and a Christmas event at the castle. These examples offer different themes for a visit; check which dates fall during your stay before travelling.

In the wider destination of Euskirchen, the EifelSchleife Burg Satzvey offers another hiking option. This easy hike is 7.4 kilometres long, starts and ends at the Katzenstein hiking car park in Mechernich and takes 1 hour and 36 minutes to walk. In the district of Euskirchen, local public transport also makes point-to-point hikes possible without returning to the starting point. Buses and trains make cycle tours easier by allowing bicycles to be carried. Check current connections and bicycle-carrying rules when planning your tour.
