Schleiden: Night Skies, Birdlife and Eifel Trails
Accommodation in Schleiden
Schleiden brings together quiet open landscapes and wooded heights, with lakes, rivers and expansive reservoirs. In Eifel National Park, wild daffodils and orchids are also part of the landscape. There are also observation spots at Urft Lake and the Urft Dam, trails to suit very different time budgets, and places where nature and history meet. When planning your visit, it’s worth choosing between night skies, wildlife watching, hiking and culture.
Stargazing and birdwatching
The observatory of the “Stars Without Borders” astronomy workshop at the Vogelsang IP International Site in the Eifel National Park Dark Sky Park regularly offers public skywatching events. For independent astronomical exploration, the Vogelsang IP “Star Park” Star View is equipped for the purpose and easy to reach. This gives you a choice between public observing events and taking in the night sky on your own.
At the Bird Watching Station on Urft Lake, you can spot cormorants, great crested grebes, ducks and grey herons. Two high-quality telescopes with 15x magnification are installed at different heights, making birdwatching comfortable for wheelchair users too. At the Urft Dam, with a little luck, you may see red and black kites as well as black storks alongside cormorants. Each observation spot offers its own species and perspectives.
Open landscapes and wide-ranging views
The Dreiborn Plateau reveals a different side of the Eifel: a quiet, open landscape shaped by agriculture and history, with broom and views stretching to the High Fens. The abandoned village of Wollseifen lies on the plateau. The village was deserted after the Second World War and is now accessible as an archaeological monument—a place where landscape and recent history come together.
On the edge of Dreiborn, the “Panoramic View” Eifel viewpoint offers sweeping views as far as Hohe Acht and Michelsberg in the Volcanic Eifel. Another viewpoint is at the Urft Dam: from there, the panorama stretches across Urft Lake and Obersee. If you’d rather experience the landscape while on the move, the hikes described here include both short and multi-day options.
Hikes for different time budgets
The “Sun, Moon and Stars” Eifel Trail is an easy, 8-kilometre hike with a stated duration of two hours. It passes through a landscape with special flora and fauna and offers views of the night sky in the International Dark Sky Park Eifel. The trail combines nature and night skies within a manageable time frame.
For longer outings, there are other tours with clearly defined route profiles: the fifth stage of the Eifelsteig is 17.5 kilometres long, moderately challenging, and leads from GemĂĽnd to Steinfeld and its namesake monastery. The third stage of the Wildnis-Trail is 22.6 kilometres long, leads from GemĂĽnd to Heimbach and crosses the Kermeter. As a multi-day option, the moderately challenging Rur-Olef Route covers 57 kilometres over three days, starting in Schleiden-GemĂĽnd and passing through Eifel National Park. The options range from a two-hour hike to a tour lasting several days.
Nature exhibitions and local history
The Eifel National Park Centre at Forum Vogelsang IP in Schleiden houses the accessible, interactive “Wildnis(t)räume” nature exhibition for people of all ages. The centre is open year-round and is the starting point for ranger-guided tours through Eifel National Park, which take place regularly. Check the current tour dates before setting out. The “Vogelsang IP Forum, Schleiden” bus stop is on the grounds; by car, the centre can be reached via the B 266 at Vogelsang 70, 53937 Schleiden. If travelling by bus, it’s a good idea to check the current services.
The “Destination: Master Race” exhibition by the Vogelsang Nazi Documentation Centre is accessible and recommended for ages 12 and up. You can explore it with a guided tour or a media guide. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit. The age recommendations can also help you choose activities for your stay: “Wildnis(t)räume” is for people of all ages, while “Destination: Master Race” is recommended for ages 12 and up.
Olef is another distinctive part of Schleiden: the district has a historic village square and a continuous half-timbered streetscape. Its village history and architecture add to the nature experiences, so every outing need not have the same focus. If you’re looking for accommodation in Schleiden, your interests can help guide your choice—whether that’s night skies, birdwatching, hiking trails or culture.
