Wassenberg offers several ways to shape a stay: hiking trails and natural areas, along with the historic town centre, its garden park and the Bergfried tower. Around the centre, routes with specific distances sit alongside a larger network of hiking trails. This lets you consider whether distance, landscape or the town’s history should take centre stage on your trip.

Hiking your own way

Myhler Schweiz is criss-crossed by small paths and field tracks that are suitable for hiking. The Wassenberg Hiking Network connects more than 85 kilometres of hiking trails, signposted in both directions. Around 66 numbered waypoints allow you to plan your own hiking routes. If you prefer to follow named trails, the premium hiking routes “Birgeler Urwald” and “Rode Beek” run through Wassenberg.

The Vital Hiking Network comprises four routes around the centre of Wassenberg: the Judenbruch Vital Hiking Trail (2.3 km), the Myhler Schweiz Vital Hiking Trail (4.5 km), the PĂĽtzchenroute Vital Hiking Trail (6.3 km) and the Bergfriedroute Vital Hiking Trail (8.0 km). The range from 2.3 to 8.0 kilometres makes route length a concrete point of comparison. You can compare the shorter Judenbruch route with the longer options; Myhler Schweiz and PĂĽtzchenroute fall between them in terms of their stated distances.

The natural areas add further destinations to consider when planning: the Wassenberg municipal area includes Judenbruch, Myhler Schweiz, Rurauen and Wassenberger Riedelland. The small paths and field tracks of Myhler Schweiz offer a specific starting point for hikes, while the larger network with its numbered waypoints is suited to planning your own routes. Both perspectives help you choose the kind of hiking day you want.

Garden park and town history

Wassenberg Garden Park is an ensemble shaped by the town’s development in the historic centre. Its features include sections of historic town walls, gently sloping garden terraces and landscaped green areas. The traces of the town wall, terraces and green spaces all help define the character of the park.

The Bergfried tower offers another glimpse into history: this square brick tower has four storeys, dates from the first half of the 15th century and marked the northernmost point of the town’s fortifications. Its shape, material and height give the building a distinctive profile, while its documented function also places it within the history of Wassenberg’s fortifications. Travellers who include architecture and historic sites alongside hiking will find a different focus here from the trails.

More landscapes in the Heinsberg travel destination

The wider Heinsberg travel destination offers further nature and culture to explore. The landscape of the Heinsberg district includes woodland and heathland in Schwalm-Nette Nature Park. The nature park in Heinsberg district has certified premium hiking and walking trails. In the Meinweg area, the National Park Region offers circular routes of varying difficulty, ranging from 5 to 13 kilometres. These include mill walks, the Smugglers’ Route and town tours.

The Meinweg area is a landscape of woodland, heath and marshland that connects the Heinsberg and Viersen districts in North Rhine-Westphalia with the Dutch province of Limburg. Teverener Heide offers a different landscape: this 450-hectare nature reserve lies in the Heinsberg region and extends across parts of the municipality of Gangelt and the towns of Geilenkirchen and Ăśbach-Palenberg. Open heathland, boggy marshes, quiet lakes, inland dunes and woodland characterise the area.

Teverener Heide has four circular walking routes: the Moor Circular Trail, at 5.8 kilometres; the Heath Circular Trail, at 6 kilometres; the Lakes Circular Trail, at 7.1 kilometres; and the Grand Circular Trail, at 9.4 kilometres. The starting points are at the designated car parks in Scherpenseel, Grotenrath and Hohenbusch. These distances can be compared with the shorter Vital Hiking Trails around the centre of Wassenberg; both sets of figures help you gauge the distance you want to hike, without implying that the locations are the same.

Art and industrial heritage in the region

Cultural discoveries also broaden the picture of Heinsberg. At the BEGAS HAUS in the town of Heinsberg, visitors can learn about four generations of the Begas artist dynasty. The collection is presented in a historic complex of buildings dating from the 16th to the 18th century. At Shaft 3 in Hückelhoven, visitors can go underground to find out how hard coal was mined at the former “Sophia-Jacoba” colliery until 1997.

Tim Berresheim’s art trail offers another link between landscape and art: the cycling route is around 90 kilometres long, follows established cycle paths through the Heinsberg region and includes 14 stops. There, the artist’s native landscape is brought together with his digital works.
