Lochtrop is associated with Scottish Highland Games as well as grassland, the Wenne and open spaces. The landscape conservation areas give these natural features a tangible form: with slopes on the edge of the village, a freely meandering river and land used as grassland.

Open Countryside and the Wenne

The “Open Countryside Areas West and South of Lochtrop” landscape conservation area covers 4.5 hectares. It includes slopes on the western edge of the village used as grassland, as well as grassland in the south. The area helps preserve the severely restricted open space between the built-up area and the extensive surroundings, which are characterised by woodland and Christmas tree plantations.

The “Wenne and Tributary near Lochtrop” landscape conservation area covers 16.4 hectares across two separate areas. Here, the Wenne meanders largely freely and is lined with trees and shrubs along some stretches. The source hollow of the tributary is used exclusively as grassland. The “Alluvial Forests / Watercourses South of Lochtrop” area covers 1.508 hectares; the “Watercourse from Frielinghausen to Lochtrop” area covers 0.845 hectares.

Highland Games and Routes with Different Paths

Highland Games have been held in Lochtrop since 2016. The local Highlander Verein invites people to the Erves-Scheune every two years, where men and women compete in Scottish contests. The biennial schedule and competitions are a defining feature of this local event.

The routes also differ in how they take in Lochtrop: the Eslohe Family Tour passes through Lochtrop on its way to Frielinghausen. The first stage of the Eslohe Grenzgänger starts in Schartmecke, initially passes Lochtrop and continues to Frielinghausen. When choosing a route, it is therefore important to check whether it goes through the village or passes it by.

Local History

On 7 November 1919, the villages of Bremke, Frielinghausen, Lochtrop and Husen founded a St. Anthony collection association. Collections were intended to raise the funds needed to establish a Catholic worship service in Bremke. In 1948, Frielinghausen, Lochtrop, Husen and Bremke formed the St. Antonius Eins. m.e.V. parish vicariate, with its own asset management.

In the wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland)

Eslohe (Sauerland) is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park and is a state-recognised climatic health resort. In the historic centre, around 200-year-old half-timbered houses stand around St. Peter and Paul Parish Church. The DampfLandLeute Museum is located in a side valley of Eslohe; its permanent exhibition covers agriculture, forestry, village crafts, folklore and technology.

From April to October, the DampfLandLeute Museum railway runs with a diesel locomotive on the first Saturday of each month from 3 to 5 p.m. Check the current timetable for a specific trip. During steam days, historic steam engines are put into operation at least twice a year.

For outdoor activities, the Bike Parcours Eslohe at the Fun & Sports Facility Eslohe offers dirt lines, jumps at three difficulty levels, a flow trail and a large pump track. Eslohe also has an indoor swimming pool, a heated outdoor pool and minigolf courses. The 84-kilometre SauerlandRadring connects Finnentrop, Eslohe, Schmallenberg and Lennestadt and follows a former railway line; in the regional context, it is designed for families and touring cyclists.

When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Lochtrop’s landscape and local history, the biennial Highland Games, or other cultural and leisure activities in the wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland). This will help you choose based on the experiences you actually want to enjoy.
