In Reiste, a listed neo-Gothic parish church, a market tradition documented since the Middle Ages and traces of brewing history meet a range of specific hiking options. Topics range from the organ and village history to a route around Reister Berg, making it possible to get to know the village from different perspectives.

Church, Organ and Local History

St. Pankratius in Reiste is a listed neo-Gothic parish church. It was consecrated on 14 November 1852. The historic organ also brings together different periods: its oldest pipes come from a Baroque organ built for Grafschaft Abbey in 1633. The instrument contains organ pipes spanning around 400 years of organ history. The precise origin of the oldest pipes and the approximate age range of the instrument make the organ a distinctive part of the local architectural and cultural history.

Reiste’s market, known as the Bartholomäusmarkt, is documented as far back as the Middle Ages. Another facet of the village’s history is the preserved former cooling tunnel, Felsenkeller, which is connected with Reiste’s brewing tradition in the 19th century. It was dug into the rock to cool Reiste beer when the available cooling facilities were not sufficient. During the Second World War, Felsenkeller served as an air-raid shelter. The market tradition, beer cooling and its later use as a shelter represent different chapters in Reiste’s history.

Hiking Trails Around Reiste

The 12.5 km hiking trail around Reister Berg offers views over Reiste and the surrounding villages. In places, it follows the Sauerland-Höhenflug and the Esloher Grenzgänger trails. The stated distance and route around the hill provide practical guidance for planning your hike, while the viewpoints also take in the village and the surrounding settlements.

The Kapellenweg Reiste offers a different focus. Its southern route starts at the parish church of St. Pankratius. The trail includes a stamp pass, which can be stamped with the seal of the respective patron saint at the village chapels. Check in advance whether this option is available during your visit. The two hiking options therefore appeal to different interests: the Kapellenweg with its village chapels, and the Reister-Berg-Weg with its stated distance, views and sections that connect with other routes.

You can also plan your journey using a train and bus connection: from Dortmund or Kassel, take a train to Meschede; from there, bus route S70 towards Grevenbrück goes directly to Reiste. Check the current timetable before setting off.

Eslohe (Sauerland) as a Regional Context

Within the wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland), Eslohe lies in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park and is a state-recognised climatic health resort. In the historic centre, half-timbered houses around 200 years old stand around the parish church of St. Peter and Paul. This village centre is a distinct point of cultural and historical interest within the region’s offerings.

The DampfLandLeute Museum is located in a side valley of Eslohe. Its permanent exhibition covers agriculture, forestry, village crafts, folklore and technology. In addition to the exhibition topics, there are two special opportunities to experience historic technology: during Steam Days, historic steam engines are put into operation at least twice a year. From April to October, the museum railway runs with a diesel locomotive on the first Saturday of every month from 3 pm to 5 pm. As seasonal operating hours can change, check the current timetable information for your planned visit.

Eslohe also offers different ways to stay active. The 84-kilometre SauerlandRadring connects Finnentrop, Eslohe, Schmallenberg and Lennestadt. The Bike Parcours Eslohe at the Fun- & Sportanlage Eslohe features dirt lines, jumps at three difficulty levels, a flow trail and a large pump track. A regional cycling route and a course with various features are thus available as distinct options, without requiring a particular riding style.

Other leisure activities in Eslohe include an indoor swimming pool, a heated outdoor pool and mini-golf courses. The local highlights remain clearly distinct: Reiste offers the topics described above, including its parish church, market, Felsenkeller and hiking trails; the museum, cycling and leisure activities belong to the wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland).
