Wenholthausen has many different sides: walks along the Wenne, trails with varied landscape views, and culture in the village. This lets you plan your trip around nature, exercise, or local history.

Walk along the Wenne and circular routes

The Wenne Path begins at Wenneplatz in the village centre. The 1.2-kilometre walking trail follows the Wenne; at its end is the Esmecke Reservoir, with a bathing cove and a large sunbathing lawn. Check the condition of these recreational facilities before your visit. The area around Wenholthausen also has the “Short Walk around Esmecke Reservoir.”

The local circular routes each offer something different: W4 loops around the village, passing Esmecke Reservoir and returning to the starting point. W6 runs along Beerenberg and past Lauschgeist. If you’re looking for a view across the Land of a Thousand Mountains, take circular route W1. The “Sauerland Höhenflug,” a “Quality Trail Wanderable Germany,” also passes directly through Wenholthausen. For cyclists, the village is right on the Hennesee Loop of the Sauerland Cycle Ring.

More experiences and leisure ideas

The elevation difference for paragliding from Markshöhe in Wenholthausen is 291 metres. Another activity is the Pit-Pat course, which combines billiards and mini golf. The range of options gives you ideas for planning a day together, without limiting your trip to just one type of outing.

Garden art, chapel and local history

The Tiger Garden is a garden of native and medicinal plants, with sculptures and paintings. The gallery in the Tiger Garden is open to visitors by telephone appointment only; arrange your visit in advance. The “Hölter” history trail helps you find your way around Wenholthausen. It invites you to visit buildings and squares in the village and discover their history and stories.

The historic Eibel Chapel is on Eibel, at the end of the Stations of the Cross. St. Cecilia’s Church also brings together different periods of construction: when the new church was built in 1971, the older church tower was retained. These destinations complement the trails through the landscape and village with their own perspective on Wenholthausen’s history.

Eslohe (Sauerland): the wider area

The wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland) lies in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park; Eslohe is a state-recognised climatic health resort. Around the parish church of St. Peter and Paul, the historic village centre is home to half-timbered houses around 200 years old. The DampfLandLeute Museum is in a side valley of Eslohe. Its permanent exhibition covers agriculture, forestry, village crafts, folklore and technology.

On steam days, historic steam engines are operated at the museum at least twice a year. From April to October, the museum railway runs with a diesel locomotive on the first Saturday of each month between 3 and 5 p.m.; check the timetable before your visit. Eslohe also has an indoor swimming pool, a heated outdoor pool and mini golf courses. The bike course at the Fun & Sport facility in Eslohe has dirt lines, jumps at three difficulty levels, a flow trail and a large pump track.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel interests

If you’re planning a trip with children or in a group, it can help to agree on priorities in advance: do you want walks and circular routes to be the main focus, are you especially interested in garden art and local history, or would you also like to include the independent attractions in the wider destination of Eslohe (Sauerland)? Base your accommodation search on the experiences you want to shape your trip.
