Nieheim: Cheese Culture, Museums and Rolling Countryside
Accommodation in Nieheim
Nieheim is located in the Egge Mountains Nature Park and in the southern Teutoburg Forest. The town is set in gently rolling fields and hedgerow countryside; hedgerows, forests and small hills also shape the hiking landscape. This combination of local history and nature offers a range of ways to explore the area. You can focus on the historic town centre and museums, or give more emphasis to hiking and cycling. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first consider whether culture, regional specialities or time on the trails will set the tone for your stay.
A town centre with a distinctive shape
Nieheim’s historic town centre is laid out in a circle around the tower of St Nicholas Church. The circular layout makes the town centre as a whole a point of interest, with the church tower at the centre of the plan. The historic town hall dates from 1610 and is built in the Weser Renaissance style. The Holster Tower is also considered a landmark of the town. This offers a range of points of interest: the layout of the town centre, a specific architectural period and a prominent landmark. You can therefore explore the town centre both through its spatial layout and through individual buildings.
Museums and cheese culture
The three museums—the German Cheese Museum, Nieheim Beer Museum and Sack Museum—can be visited together. The German Cheese Museum presents the history and production of cheese and features an early Nieheim cheese kitchen with utensils and tools. Nieheim cheese is made from skimmed milk; it is linked to Nieheim’s identity as a place celebrated as Germany’s cheese capital. The Nieheim Beer Museum focuses on Westphalian beer culture and the brewing history of former and present-day traditional breweries in the Höxter district. The Sack Museum explores the materials and uses of sacks, including jute fabrics. The subjects therefore range from cheese-making and beer culture to textiles and everyday objects—three different ways of exploring local and regional everyday culture.
Hiking, cycling and far-reaching views
There are around 130 kilometres of hiking trails around Nieheim. Hedgerows, forests and small hills shape the hiking landscape. For cyclists, routes pass through cultural landscapes and hedgerow country, by castles and picturesque villages. A circular route of around 32 kilometres runs through the Nieheim cultural landscape. This means you can compare the hiking network, with its approximate total length, with one specific circular cycling route with a stated distance—two different approaches to planning a day out. The Lattberg observation and telecommunications tower is 24 metres high; its viewing platform offers wide-ranging views. The trails through the landscape therefore complement the view from the tower, which provides a broad panorama.
Nieheim within the wider Höxter destination
Within the wider Höxter destination, the district of Höxter combines culture, nature and active holidays in the hilly low mountain landscapes of the Teutoburg Forest and the Weser Uplands. One regional cycling option is the 65-kilometre Netheradweg cycle route. It follows the Nethe from its source to its mouth at the Weser and runs between Bad Driburg and Höxter. When planning your trip, you can consider Nieheim’s townscape and trails as local highlights and the Netheradweg as a regional cycling tour.
