In Korschenbroich, landscapes, local history and active exploration come together. Liedberg lies on a distinctive quartzite ridge; Liedberg Castle, the protected “Haag” forest and walking trails give the area its varied character.

Liedberg: landscape and architectural history

Liedberg lies on a quartzite ridge 34 metres high, 700 metres long and 400 metres wide. Liedberg Castle was built on the eastern edge of this ridge in the 14th century as a state castle of the Electorate of Cologne. These measurements give the landscape a tangible scale, while the castle’s history places the area in a clearly defined historical period.

Another historical landmark in the wider Rhein-Kreis Neuss travel destination is the listed Mühlenturm in Liedberg. It was probably built in the 12th century as part of the fortifications of Liedberg’s second castle, later converted into a windmill and operated until 1836. Its presumed date of construction and the end of its operation as a mill mark different periods in its history.

Forest trails, walks and local experiences

The Liedberger Wald “Haag” is a protected area. Walks are possible on marked trails; to protect the forest, please stay on these trails. After-work walks in Korschenbroich include forest trails in Hoppbruch and the Haag. The walk at the Haag starts and ends in the centre of Liedberg, providing a clearly specified starting and ending point for planning your day.

The Liedberg local history association offers guided tours of Liedberg; check the current arrangements before your visit. A rally through Liedberg is also suggested as an activity for the whole family. This gives you the choice of both a guided format and a family-friendly idea for exploring the area.

For more than four decades, the local history association has traditionally held a soapbox race in Liedberg in May or June. If the race is important to your travel plans, check the exact date for your stay. Schloss Myllendonk is home to a golf club; its dining area is open to all interested visitors.

Cycling in Korschenbroich and the district

Cycling can also be part of your travel plans: the main and secondary routes of the NiederRheinroute pass right through Korschenbroich. This differs from the Haag loop, which starts and ends in the centre of Liedberg. If you would like to plan your accommodation and days around cycling tours, you can take these different route locations into account.

In the wider Rhein-Kreis Neuss travel destination, the cycling infrastructure extends for around 1,200 kilometres and includes a clearly signposted cycle network with numbered junctions. The district is crossed by the Rhine Cycle Route, the Erft Cycle Route, the Fietsallee am Nordkanal, the Niederrhein Route and the Hanse Cycle Route, which are regional themed cycling routes. All these routes are signposted except for the Hanse Cycle Route. This regional network complements the routes that pass through Korschenbroich.

The Rhein-Kreis Neuss offers families further destinations with a different focus: since 1988, the Tannenbusch near Dormagen has had a nature trail with eleven stations. Its information about nature and environmental issues is presented in a child-friendly way. This makes it possible to combine Liedberg’s local history and forest setting with a regional outing that introduces children to nature-related topics.
