You can get to know Meerbusch through its distinctive landscapes as well as its cultural venues in the different districts. The Rhine waterfront, cycling routes, Latumer See, and the theatre and mill culture of Lank-Latum offer a range of starting points for planning your trip. When looking for accommodation, it may help to first consider which of these interests are most important for your stay.

The Rhine waterfront, the Old Rhine meander and Latumer See

The 11-kilometre Meerbusch Rhine waterfront stretches between Büderich in the south and Nierst in the north. The Rhine Dyke Cycle Route is another point of reference for cyclists: it crosses Meerbusch from the Krefeld city boundary in the north to the Düsseldorf city boundary at Lörick in the south. This describes both the scenic Rhine waterfront and a route running north to south through the city.

The natural areas also each have their own character. The Ilverich Old Rhine meander provides a refuge for rare animal and plant species. In the 1980s, the area around Latumer See was transformed into a local recreation and landscape conservation area. The woodland and fields around the lake are home to numerous animal and plant species.

At Latumer See, you can walk around the lake and take a break on wooden platforms by the water. Joggers use a circular route there. Swimming and boating are prohibited at the lake, so if you are looking for an activity by the water, you can walk and linger here rather than swim or go boating.

Planning a cycling trip: a circular tour or a network of routes

For a specific circular ride, there is the 38-kilometre Stadt-Land-Fluss route. It starts at Osterath station and goes all the way around the city of Meerbusch. In addition, Meerbusch has around 70 kilometres of cycle paths and 150 kilometres of mostly smoothly paved farm roads. The route describes a specific tour; the information about cycle paths and farm roads also gives an overview of the wider network. These different scales can help you decide whether to follow a named circular tour or explore other routes.

Theatre, mill and monuments

In the heart of the Lank-Latum district, Forum Wasserturm offers cabaret, variety performances, comedy, theatre, cinema and concerts. A special tradition is the Lotumer Buretheater's performance season: it begins every year in October and features theatre in the local Platt dialect. The Teloy Mill in Lank-Latum is the only mill in the city with fully restored sails. Today, it is used as an exhibition venue and meeting place.

Historic sites also include Gut Dyckhof in Büderich, a moated castle complex first documented in 1393. The park of Haus Meer, together with the foundations of the old coach house, the garden pavilion known as the “Teehäuschen” (tea house), the ice cellar, the immunity wall, the remaining foundations and the vaulted cellar of the former Meer monastery, forms a listed ensemble. Another distinctive site is the Alter-Kirchturm memorial, considered Joseph Beuys's only complete work of art in a public space outside a museum setting.

Animal and play areas

If you would like to include animal-related activities and play areas in your day's plans, the grounds of the Arche Noah youth farm offer several specific places to visit: animal houses, enclosures and aviaries, ponds with bridges and walkways, and a pony-riding track. Play areas include swings, slides, carousels and ride-on vehicles. The combination of these areas gives an insight into the variety of the grounds, without any one activity having to define your visit.

River crossing and finding accommodation

The modern Michaela II, operated by Meerbusch's Schäfer ferry family, now makes the crossing on the Langst-Kaiserswerth Rhine ferry. If you plan to cross, check the timetable in advance. You can use your planned activities as a guide when choosing accommodation—for example, the circular tour from Osterath, cultural activities in Lank-Latum or walks at Latumer See. When searching, check the location of each accommodation option against your own plans rather than assuming a particular distance or connection.
