Blomberg combines a historic townscape with a hilly landscape and a range of ways to explore the surrounding area. The municipality in Lippe has around 16,000 residents. More than 250 restored half-timbered houses define the historic old town; the Niederntor is the only surviving town gate in Lippe. If you would like to combine culture and activity, you can explore the town’s history independently and enjoy trails and tours of varying lengths.

Half-Timbered Houses, Castle and Crafts

Blomberg Castle was probably built around the time the town was founded, circa 1250. The stone oriel window dating from 1569 is an important example of Weser Renaissance architecture at the castle. You can also explore Blomberg’s historic town trail independently, without a guided tour.

The history of the town is also linked to shoemaking. For a time, the shoemakers’ guild was the largest craft guild in the town, with more than 100 master craftsmen. The historic shoemaker’s workshop is located in the town library at Kuhstraße 16. Ulmenstein and Vöchting established Blomberg’s reputation as the “Carnation Town.”

In Reelkirchen, a 1,000-year-old linden tree stands in front of a historic church; there is also an 18th-century moated castle. Directional signs have been put up to guide visitors as they explore the area around Reelkirchen. These points of interest complement Blomberg’s half-timbered houses and castle with additional historic sites.

Compare Forest Trails and Tours

Blomberg is set in a hilly landscape. The municipal forest has hiking trails, routes for cyclists and Nordic walkers, and benches in quiet spots. This makes it possible to include different ways of getting around in your travel plans, from walking to cycling. If you plan to use the trails, check the latest route information beforehand.

The Blomberg town walk is listed as 6.56 kilometres long, with 67 metres of elevation gain and a duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes. The 42-kilometre Nelkenweg is marked with a large “N” and can be walked in stages; you can join or leave it at various points. This gives you the choice of a route with a stated walking time and a much longer trail with the option of walking it in stages. Check the distance, markings and latest trail information before setting out.

There is also a cycling option with a specified distance: the Digital Panoramic Cycling Route is a regional tour covering 33.39 kilometres and is rated moderate. Check the distance and difficulty rating again before your ride. A night watchman’s tour offers a different experience: stories, anecdotes and legends come to life by lantern light. Dates and availability may vary, so check them in advance.
