Kierspe: Reservoir Trails, Museums and Listening Points
Accommodation in Kierspe
Kierspe brings together waterways, collections and listening experiences. The Kierspe Reservoir Route, several museums and ten listening points spread throughout the town offer different ways to get to know the area; at the Jubach Reservoir, a 2.7 km trail also leads around the water. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first asking whether you would rather spend time outdoors, discover exhibitions or experience practical demonstrations.
Reservoirs and Trails
The Kierspe Reservoir Route begins and ends in Rönsahl, a district of Kierspe, and later goes around the Kerspe Reservoir. At the Jubach Reservoir, by contrast, a 2.7 km trail leads around the water. The Jubach Reservoir can only be reached on foot from the Herlinghausen-Volme hiking car park. This lets you choose between a route with a named start and end point and a trail with a stated length.
Bakelite, Literature and Tin Soldiers
The Kierspe Bakelite Museum is described as unique in Germany and displays several thousand exhibits in a changing exhibition. The objects are made from the world’s first plastic and include kitchen appliances, bicycle handles, light switches, a “magic lantern,” Volksempfänger radios, ashtrays, hair dryers and typewriters. The examples range from kitchen and household objects to writing and everyday items, illustrating the breadth of the collection.
The Fritz Linde Museum exhibits books and letters by Fritz Linde, a local poet from Kierspe. The Märkisches Tin Figure Cabinet offers a different collection focus: it displays around 15,000 tin figures and 50 dioramas. Visitors must arrange an appointment in advance with Detlef Voigt-Wetzel.
The Schleiper Hammer also combines history with hands-on experiences. It is located in the Schleipetal, a right-hand side valley of the Volme in the area of the town of Kierspe. Visitors can watch demonstrations of old production machines and try their hand at operating them. Watching and taking part are explicitly combined here.
Listening Points and Group Activities
The ten Kierspe listening points are spread throughout the town, offering a different way to experience the area than a single museum visit. A guided tour of Kierspe can also be booked for private groups. This means individual explorations around town and a shared group activity are both available, without requiring them to follow the same format.
Find Accommodation Based on Your Interests
If you are planning a family trip, you can weigh everyone’s interests together: should the program focus mainly on trails by the reservoirs, collections or a demonstration where you can take part? This priority gives your search for accommodation in Kierspe a direction and helps you tailor your stay to the experiences that matter to you.
A Broader Look at the Märkischer Kreis
The wider travel destination of Märkischer Kreis offers additional themes. Altena Castle is a monument of national importance and was the site of the world’s first and therefore oldest permanent youth hostel. The German Wire Museum covers wire production, past and present, as well as the technological, social, economic and cultural history of wire; interactive stations invite visitors to take part.
