Menden (Sauerland) combines city history with nature watching and hands-on activities. At Poenigeturm, medieval fortifications meet modern art; at Hexenteich, you can watch turtles in sunny spots along the shore. Cycling, museum visits and experiences for families offer a variety of highlights.

City History between a Defensive Tower and a Museum

Poenigeturm was one of the twelve defensive towers formerly incorporated into Menden’s city wall. The medieval tower combines an original historic site with a modern art installation, bringing the impregnability, height and coldness of a stone fortress tower to life. The exhibition “47 Witch Shrines” by Ulla Brockfeld and Dagmar Müller is a permanent feature of the museum’s offerings at Poenigeturm. It commemorates the victims of the witch hunts and explores their fate in depth.

Menden City Museum is housed in the splendid 1730 patrician home of merchant and mayor Biggeleben. Its collections span from the Paleolithic Age to the 20th century and reflect the way of life of people in Menden and its region across different social classes and eras. Tours of Menden City Museum can still be booked for agreed dates. The Menden museums offer city and museum tours focusing on history, culture and specific themes. Private group tours must be booked at least two weeks in advance; they usually last 60 to 90 minutes.

The ruins of Rodenberg Castle on Hünenköpfchen also tell the story of the Middle Ages. Their features include exposed walls, remnants of ramparts and ditches, and far-reaching views.

Nature Watching and Hands-On Activities

At Hexenteich, you can watch the red-eared and yellow-bellied sliders living there in sunny spots along the shore of a peaceful circular path. This means they can be observed in specific locations and in sunny conditions. Noah’s Ark Menden offers another way to explore forests, water and wilderness: year-round, it runs creative hands-on programs and rallies where families can discover these themes through play.

At Gut Rödinghausen, a free audio tour on Menden’s industrial history is available, as well as a trail for children to follow. Alongside nature watching, the program also includes history to listen to and explore.

Cycling Route, Industrial Heritage and a Christmas Tradition

The RuhrtalRadweg stretches for a total of 240 kilometers, nearly six of which run through Menden. A Bessemer converter from the Rödinghausen ironworks stands in Menden as a landmark along a cycling route. These two features offer different highlights: one is the route of a long-distance cycling trail, the other a striking object connected to industrial history.

A recurring event is the traditional tower serenade: every Christmas Eve since 1928, it has taken place in the square in front of Menden’s Old Town Hall. Many people from Menden attend with their families and friends.

More to Explore in the Märkischer Kreis

The wider Märkischer Kreis travel destination offers other distinct cultural and landscape attractions. Altena Castle is a monument of national importance and was home to the world’s first—and therefore oldest—permanent youth hostel. The Felsenmeer in Hemer offers a different perspective on the region: its rock formations developed over centuries through the influence of wind, water and people; it is also home to one of the oldest iron ore mining areas in Westphalia. The Felsenmeer may only be visited via designated paths. The designated panoramic trail leads to the viewpoints.

Whether you want to focus your stay on city history, cycling, nature watching or activities for families, these highlights give you a concrete starting point for your accommodation search.
