Discover Hille: Moorland, Forest and Milling Heritage
Accommodation in Hille
The municipality of Hille lies between the slopes of the Wiehen Hills and the open North German Plain. The Mittelland Canal runs through the municipality’s fields. Nature and cultural experiences add different dimensions to a stay: the Great Peat Bog and the Mindenerwald are defined by their landscapes, while historic mills, a former distillery and a Baroque manor house offer insights into craftsmanship and architectural history. If you enjoy choosing between nature and cultural-historical discoveries, Hille offers a range of themes for your trip.
The Great Peat Bog and its landscape
Within the wider Minden-Lübbecke travel destination, the Great Peat Bog in Hille and Lübbecke is one of the best-known and most popular nature spots. It covers around 500 hectares, was officially designated a nature reserve in 1980 and is considered Westphalia’s largest raised bog. Wooden boardwalks lead into the bog, which provides a habitat for rare plants and birds. The combination of moorland, a protected area and special habitats gives this natural environment its distinctive character.
Moorhus, the visitor centre, provides information about how the Great Peat Bog formed and is the point of contact for booking guided bog walks. The DĂĽtt un' Datt programme also brings nature and culture together: it combines a guided walk through the Great Peat Bog with an explanation of grain distilling at the distillery museum. Check current booking options for the walk and programme before making plans.
Forest and meadows as a different natural setting
Another natural setting is the Mindenerwald’s roughly 47-hectare landscape of forests and meadows around Sonnenhügel. It offers opportunities for walking and relaxation. This gives you two different nature themes to choose from: the Great Peat Bog is characterised by its boardwalks and habitats for rare plants and birds, while the Mindenerwald focuses on forests, meadows, walking and relaxation.
Mills, distillery and craftsmanship
The historic Meyer distillery complex at Mindener StraĂźe 71 consists of a distillery building and a boiler house with a chimney. The preserved technical equipment of the former distillery makes every step of grain distilling easy to follow. The buildings and equipment thus offer two different insights into the history of the distilling trade.
The Südhemmern Windmill was built around 1830 as a wooden, octagonal mill. The local history room in the former miller’s house showcases flax processing, spinning, weaving, rope-making and cigar-making. The displays therefore cover everything from processing flax to other crafts. Historic windmills in Hille are also part of the Westphalian Mill Route.
Another testament to architectural history is the Von-Oeynhausen manor house, also known as Reimlers Hof. The Baroque manor house is a listed architectural and cultural monument. Together with the mills and distillery complex, it presents a broad range of heritage, from technical equipment and craftsmanship to historic architecture.
A trip on a historic Prussian train departing from Minden can also be combined with a walk around Hille and a visit to the Old Distillery. Check current operating days and availability in advance.
