Discover Hüllhorst: Mills, Museums and Theatre
Accommodation in Hüllhorst
The Mühlenroute (Mill Route) of the Minden-Lübbecke district passes through Hüllhorst; the LandArt Route 4 also reaches the town. The local history museum, toy collection and seasonal theatre add a glimpse of everyday culture and the performing arts to these route ideas.
Routes between mills and art
The LandArt Route 4 runs via Lübbecke and Preußisch Oldendorf to Hüllhorst, on the southern side of the Wiehen Hills. Along the way, it passes LandArt stations, each with its own offerings. The two routes have different emphases: the Mill Route connects your stay with the region’s milling tradition, while the LandArt Route takes in stations with their own offerings.
Mills also shape the cultural landscape across the wider Minden-Lübbecke destination: the district has 43 operational windmills, watermills and horse mills. The Mill Route links more than 40 windmills, watermills and horse- or motor-powered mills in a “mill museum” along a circular route of about 280 kilometres. The route through Hüllhorst is therefore part of a broader mill theme that extends across the district.
Everyday culture, collections and theatre
Hüllhorst’s local history museum was founded in 1910 and is housed in a former school. It presents the everyday culture of Hüllhorst’s population in the 19th century. Its focus is therefore on local life during that period.
The toy museum in the Mühlenkreis displays more than 500 dolls, over 100 dolls’ houses and almost 1,500 model cars. The collection also includes steam engines, model trains, teddy bears, picture books and games. It offers a different perspective from the local history museum, focusing on toys and collectible items in a variety of forms.
The Kahle Wart open-air theatre is located in Oberbauerschaft in the Wiehen Hills. Three original half-timbered houses form the backdrop for plays performed in Low German and Standard German. Performances are seasonal; check the schedule before your visit.
More experiences in the Minden-Lübbecke destination
At the LWL Industrial Museum Glashütte Gernheim, visitors can watch glassmakers use a blowing iron, wooden mould and shears to shape vessels from molten glass in the glass tower built in 1826. Here, the craft takes centre stage, while Hüllhorst’s local history and toy museums explore other collection and everyday-life themes.
Guided hikes with trained nature and landscape guides are offered in the Great Peat Bog in Hille and Lübbecke. Those interested in cycling will find 11 cycle routes running across the Mühlenkreis Minden-Lübbecke district. The Weser Cycle Route runs between Porta Westfalica and Petershagen; some sections can be covered by passenger boat.
If you want to focus on Hüllhorst, its museums, open-air theatre and routes, narrow your search to the town. If you also want to include destinations in the Minden-Lübbecke district, take them into account when choosing your location.
