Minden – Cathedral, Old Town and Waterway Junction
Accommodation in Minden
The Minden Waterway Junction is considered the world’s largest double waterway junction. A 341-metre-long canal bridge crosses the Weser and has been in place since the opening of the Mittelland Canal in 1906. Nearby, the cathedral, which is more than 1,200 years old, the treasury and the half-timbered houses of the Upper and Lower Towns represent other sides of the city. You can discover Minden through its water engineering and shipping, city history or historic architecture.
The Weser, locks and the ship mill
If you would like to learn more about the waterway junction, an approximately two-hour guided tour at the information centre uses models, graphics and maps to give an overview of the complex and its surroundings. It then takes you to the modern Weser lock and the historic shaft lock. As dates may vary, it is worth checking the current schedule in advance.
Another way to explore the area is the Waterway Junction Discovery Trail, where you can discover the connection between culture, history and nature at your own pace. The ship mill also offers a special perspective on the Weser. Germany’s only operational ship mill is located on the Weser near Minden city centre. The mill has a restaurant where you can learn from the millers how grain is turned into flour.
The Old Town and stories of the city
Cobblestone lanes and closely connected half-timbered houses shape the character of the Upper and Lower Towns. You can explore the Old Town Route on your own using the city map or digitally via Komoot. If you would rather combine city history with storytelling, Minden offers various city and themed tours. They share the city’s history and stories; as dates may vary, it is advisable to check the latest information before taking part.
The cathedral, treasury and pilgrimage routes
The history of Minden Cathedral began at the end of the 8th century with the construction of a simple, towerless hall church on Cathedral Hill. The Cathedral Treasury houses the Minden Cross, the St Peter’s Shrine, the Silver Madonna and numerous valuable museum treasures. The Cathedral Treasury is also a stamp station and information point for pilgrims on the Sigwardsweg and on the Way of St James No. 3 from Minden to Soest.
The Cathedral Treasury is accessible. Check accessibility arrangements before travelling; if you have any questions, you can contact the visitor service in the foyer at Kleiner Domhof 24. The Cathedral Treasury app provides information about the exhibits in the Minden Cathedral Treasury, as well as events at the Treasury and Minden Cathedral.
City history at the Minden Museum
The Minden Museum presents the city’s distinctive character in the past, present and future through a permanent exhibition on city history and special exhibitions. The permanent exhibition divides Minden’s history into seven chapters, each offering a different perspective. A multimedia city model currently offers seven different multimedia city tours. You can explore several ways of interpreting the city, from themed exhibition visits to digital orientation around the city.
Tailor your stay to your interests
When looking for accommodation, you can start by considering which themes you would like to shape your stay. The cathedral, treasury and museum offer an introduction to the city’s history, while the guided tour and discovery trail focus on different aspects of the waterway junction. If you would like to explore Minden independently, you can also choose the Old Town Route using the city map or digitally via Komoot. These differences can help you choose experiences according to your interests and preferred way of discovering the city.
